EXECUTION STAYED

56 YEAR OLD HUBERT MICHAEL WAS SCHEDULED TO RECEIVE A LETHAL INJECTION LAST NIGHT AT ROCKVIEW STATE PRISON IN CENTRE COUNTY, BUT INSTEAD THE U-S 3RD CIRCUIT COURT OF APPEALS GRANTED A LAST MINUTE STAY AND AGREED TO HAVE THE DETAILS OF HIS CASE EXAMINED. HUBERT WAS FOUND GUILTY IN 1993 OF MURDERING A 16 YEAR OLD YORK COUNTY GIRL. HE WAS PREVIOUSLY GRANTED STAYS IN 1996 AND 2004.  DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTIONS OFFICIALS SAY NOW THAT THE WARRANT HAS EXPIRED, MICHAEL WILL GO BACK TO GREENE STATE PRISON IN WAYNESBURG, AND GOVERNOR TOM CORBETT WILL HAVE TO SIGN ANOTHER DEATH WARRANT.

TODDLER’S FUNERAL TODAY

PITTSBURGH MAYOR LUKE RAVENSTAHL THINKS THE DEATH OF A TODDLER AT THE AFRICAN PAINTED DOGS EXHIBIT IS UNACCEPTABLE AND HE WANTS PITTSBURGH ZOO TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT. THE MAYOR SAYS IT'S TIME FOR OFFICIALS TO CHECK THEIR EGOS AT THE DOOR, SIT DOWN TOGETHER, AND MAKE SURE THIS TYPE OF ACCIDENT NEVER HAPPENS AGAIN. 2-YEAR-OLD MADDOX DERKOSH SLIPPED FROM HIS MOTHER'S ARMS AS HE SAT ON THE RAIL OVERLOOKING THE DOGS AND WAS MAULED TO DEATH AFTER FALLING ABOUT 12-FEET INTO THE EXHIBIT. FUNERAL SERVICES ARE SCHEDULED TODAY.

BUSINESS DESTROYED

FIRE VICTIMS ESCAPE

A WOMAN AND 2 CHILDREN ESCAPED SAFELY ABOUT 7 YESTERDAY MORNING WHEN FIRE BROKE OUT AT THEIR HOME ON 28TH AVENUE IN ALTOONA. THE FLAMES WERE CONTAINED TO THE UPSTAIRS, BUT DAMAGE WAS EXTENSIVE. THE FIRE IS NOT CONSIDERED SUSPICIOUS AND THE CAUSE IS STILL UNDER INVESTIGATION.

CHILD MOLESTER SENTENCED

A BEDFORD COUNTY CHILD RAPIST WAS SENTENCED YESTERDAY TO 80 TO 195 YEARS IN A STATE PRISON. AUTHORITIES SAY 51 YEAR OLD KERRY SMITH OF EVERETT ABUSED 2 SISTERS WHEN THEY WERE 11 YEARS OLD AND YOUNGER. HE HAD BEEN HIRED TO BABYSIT THEM. THE JUDGE ALSO DESIGNATED SMITH AS A SEXUALLY VIOLENT PREDATOR.

LONG SENTENCE FOR DRUG DEALER

A BLAIR COUNTY JUDGE YESTERDAY SENTENCED NATASHA MILLER OF ALTOONA TO 16 TO 32 YEARS IN A STATE PRISON. THE ALTOONA MIRROR REPORTS SHE WAS A MAJOR PART OF A BALTIMORE-TO-ALTOONA COCAINE RING OPERATING OUT OF THE CORNER BAR & GRILL ON 8TH AVENUE. MILLER…THE GIRLFRIEND OF RINGLEADER DAMION FLOYD…IS ONE OF 5 PEOPLE WHO HAVE ENTERED GUILTY PLEAS. AUTHORITIES MADE 14 ARRESTS.

BLAIR COUNTY TAX HIKE?

BLAIR COUNTY RESDIENTS ARE LIKELY TO SEE A TAX HIKE IN 2013. COMMISSIONERS MEET TUESDAY…AND THE ALTOONA MIRROR REPORTS THAT COUNTY FINANCE DIRECTOR ROBERT KUNTZ WILL INTRODUCE A BUDGET THAT INCLUDES A 3-POINT-5 MILL REAL ESTATE TAX HIKE. COMMISSIONERS SAY THEY WILL CONTINUE TO LOOK FOR PLACES TO CUT SPENDING.

VOTER TURNOUT

THOUGH THE POLLS WERE STRONG ON ELECTION DAY, VOTER TURNOUT WASN’T QUITE AS HIGH AS IN 2008. ROUGHLY 5-AND-A-HALF MILLION PENNSYLVANIANS CAST BALLOTS ON TUESDAY, WHICH IS A LITTLE LESS THAN 65-PERCENT OF THE STATE’S REGISTERED VOTERS. VOTER TURNOUT WAS NEARLY 68-PERCENT DURING THE LAST PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION.
