BOYFRIEND ARRESTED FOR MURDER

U-S MARSHALS ARRESTED 23 YEAR OLD JONATHAN BEAL OF MEYERSDALE YESTERDAY MORNING IN A NEW ORLEANS SUBURB. HE WAS HIDING THE BATHROOM OF A HOME. FRIENDS SAY BEAL ADMITTED STRANGLING HIS GIRLFRIEND, 19-YEAR-OLD JUSTINE JACKSON, THEN BURYING HER BODY IN A SHALLOW GRAVE. IT WAS FOUND SUNDAY NEAR THE GREAT ALLEGHENY PASSAGE TRAIL NEAR MEYERSDALE. JUSTINE HAD TOLD FAMILY MEMBERS SHE WAS PREGNANT WITH BEAL’S CHILD.
HE WILL BE EXTRADITED TO SOMERSET COUNTY TO FACE CHARGES. AUTHORITIES SAY BEAL HAS A VIOLENT PAST WITH OTHER WOMEN AND HE TOLD SOME FRIENDS THAT HE HAD KILLED JACKSON. BEAL WAS REPORTEDLY STAYING WITH AN EX-GIRLFRIEND IN LOUISIANA.

EMERGENCY LANDING

NO ONE WAS HURT YESTERDAY AFTERNOON WHEN A SMALL COMMERCIAL PLANE HAD TO MAKE AN EMERGENCY LANDING AT UNIVERSITY PARK AIRPORT. THE UNITED AIRWAYS EXPRESS FLIGHT HAD JUST TAKEN OFF AND WAS HEADING TO DULLES NEAR WASHINGTON, D.C., WHEN THE PILOTS NOTICED THAT THE LANDING GEAR WOULDN’T RETRACT. EMERGENCY CREWS ROLLED OUT ALL OF THE EQUIPMENT…THEN THE PLANE… CARRYING 36 PASSENGERS…LANDED SAFELY.

SANDUSKY SCANDAL

STATE AUDITOR GENERAL JACK WAGNER YESTERDAY RELEASED A 124-PAGE REPORT THAT OUTLINES THE PROBLEMS AT PENN STATE. WAGNER CALLS FOR LEADERSHIP, WHICH INCLUDES THE GOVERNOR AND GENERAL ASSEMBLY TAKING CHARGE OF REFORMING THE UNIVERSITY AND FIXING THE ISSUES THAT WAGNER BELIEVES TRUSTEES HAVE NOT TRIED TO FIX. WAGNER ALSO SAYS CORBETT AND UNIVERSITY PRESIDENT RODNEY ERICKSON HAVE TOO MUCH POWER AS VOTING MEMBERS OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES. HE PROPOSES CUTTING THE SIZE OF THE BOARD FROM 32 TO 21 MEMBERS. WAGNER SAYS JERRY SANDUSKY COULD HAVE BEEN CAUGHT SOONER IF THE POWER STRUCTURE HAD BEEN CHANGED YEARS AGO.

THE FREEH REPORT HAD 119 RECOMMENDATIONS FOR PENN STATE IN THE WAKE OF THE JERRY SANDUSKY SCANDAL AND DAVID GRAY, SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT FOR BUSINESS AND FINANCE TELLS WTAJ ABOUT 53  ARE EITHER SUBSTANTIALLY COMPLETE, COMPLETE, OR ON-GOING BY THEIR VERY NATURE. MANY OF THE CHANGES FOCUS ON THE ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT AND THE SCHOOL HAS COMPLETED 11 OF 12 RECOMMENDATIONS…INCLUDING MAKING SURE THAT THE COMPLIANCE OFFICER HAS OVERSIGHT OF THE ENTIRE PROGRAM…AND DETERMINING WHO IS PERMITTED TO USE PENN STATE ATHLETIC FACILITIES. THE SCHOOL ALSO REQUIRES MANDATORY CONDUCT ABUSE TRAINING FOR ITS VOLUNTEERS AND EMPLOYEES. AND IT HAS EXPANDED BOARD OF TRUSTEES COMMITTEES TO HANDLE LEGAL AND AUDIT RISKS.

BLAIR COUNTY COMMISSIONERS ARE CONTINUING TUESDAY’S MEETING TODAY SO THEY CAN HEAR FROM VALLEY VIEW NURSING HOME WORKERS CONCERNED ABOUT THE PLANS TO POSSIBLY SELL THE FACILITY. THE COUNTY HAS HIRED A REAL ESTATE INVESTMENT FIRM TO MARKET THE
PROPERTY.  A HARRISBURG ATTORNEY IS ALSO ON BOARD TO REPRESENT THE COUNTY IN A POSSIBLE SALE.

THE HOLLIDAYSBURG AREA SCHOOL BOARD UNANIMOUSLY AGREED LAST NIGHT TO SELL THE FORMER ALLEGHENY ONE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL PROPERTY TO DREW SWOPE AND 2 BROTHERS OF THE DEGOL ORGANIZATION FOR 610-THOUSAND DOLLARS. IF THE COURTS APPROVE, THE NEW OWNERS PLAN TO RENOVATE THE BUILDING INTO ASSISTED LIVING AND PRIVATE APARTMENTS.
