SANDUSKY SCANDAL

LEGAL EXPERTS SAY THEY WILL BE SURPRISED IF JERRY SANDUSKY IS GRANTED A NEW TRIAL, BUT THE DECISION IS UP TO JUDGE JOHN CLELAND. THE DEFENSE'S PRIMARY ARGUMENT IS THAT THEY DID NOT HAVE TIME TO PREPARE FOR THE TRIAL AND GO OVER MORE THAN 12-THOUSAND PAGES OF DOCUMENTS. IT MAY HAVE HURT THEIR CASE WHEN LEAD ATTORNEY JOE AMENDOLA TESTIFIED THAT NO DOCUMENTS REVIEWED SINCE THE CONVICTION WOULD HAVE HELPED THE DEFENSE AT ALL. CLELAND IS EXPECTED TO RULE ON THE APPEAL IN ABOUT 30 DAYS.

ATTORNEY TOM KLINE IS REPRESENTING JERRY SANDUSKY’S SO-CALLED VICTIM 5 AND SAYS THE FIRST PHASE OF SETTLEMENT TALKS WITH PENN STATE IS FINISHED, AND THE SIDES ARE NOW DISCUSSING MONEY. ATTORNEYS NOT AFFILIATED WITH THE CASE HAVE SAID RESOLVING THE CLAIMS AND LAWSUITS COULD END UP COSTING PENN STATE TENS OF MILLIONS OF DOLLARS.

ATTORNEY GENERAL-ELECT KATHLEEN KANE WILL BE SWORN INTO OFFICE ON TUESDAY AND SHE ANNOUNCED YESTERDAY THAT SHE WILL APPOINT A SPECIAL PROSECUTOR TO INVESTIGATE THE HANDLING OF THE JERRY SANDUSKY CASE. KANE SAYS THAT PERSON WILL FOCUS SOLELY ON SCRUNTINIZING THE INVESTIGATION THAT RESULTED IN SANDUSKY’S ARREST AND LATER CONVICTION. KANE HAS NOT SET A DEADLINE TO HAVE THE INVESTIGATION FINISHED.

AFTER BEING SURPRISED WITH THE NEWS THAT THE STATE PRISONS IN CRESSON AND GREENSBURG WILL BE SHUT DOWN LATER THIS YEAR, SOME LAWMAKERS ARE CALLING FOR PUBLIC HEARINGS. STATE REPRESENTATIVE GARY HALUSKA REPRESENTS NORTHERN CAMBRIA COUNTY AND SAYS PUBLIC HEARINGS COULD GIVE PEOPLE AFFECTED BY THE CLOSINGS THE CHANCE TO BE HEARD. STATE OFFICIALS SAY TAXPAYERS WILL SAVE UP TO 35-MILLION DOLLARS A YEAR WHEN THE 2 AGING PRISONS ARE CLOSED. PRISONERS FROM THE 2 FACILITIES WILL BE TRANSFERRED TO OTHER STATE PRISONS INCLUDING THE NEW S-C-I BENNER NEAR STATE COLLEGE.

BLAIR COUNTY RE-ASSESSMENT?

THE ALTOONA MIRROR REPORTS THAT BLAIR COUNTY COMMISSIONERS SAID YESTERDAY THEY MAY HAVE TO DO A PROPERTY RE-ASSESSMENT SOMETIME IN THE FUTURE. A RE-ASSESSMENT HASN’T BEEN DONE SINCE 1958 AND COMMISSIONER DIANE MELING HOPES IT’S STILL A FEW YEARS OFF. THE COUNTY JUST RAISED TAXES IN 2013 AND IS 2-AND-A-HALF MILLS FROM THE MAXIMUM THAT CAN BE LEVIED.

NO PAYCHECK FOR SOME CAMBRIA COUNTY WORKERS

TODAY IS SUPPOSED TO BE PAYDAY FOR MORE THAN 50 CONSTABLES AND TAX COLLECTORS IN CAMBRIA COUNTY, BUT THEY’RE NOT GETTING THEIR CHECKS. EDUCATION GETS A LOUSY GRADE

PENNSYLVANIA EDUCATION BARELY MAKES THE GRADE. THAT'S ACCORDING TO "EDUCATION WEEKLY'S" ANNUAL QUALITY COUNTS STUDY THAT TRACKS KEY INDICATORS IN QUALITY EDUCATION AROUND THE U.S.  PENNSYLVANIA EARNED A GRADE OF C-PLUS, ONLY A COUPLE OF POINTS ABOVE THE NATIONAL AVERAGE. MARYLAND HAD THE NATION'S TOP SCORE, A B-PLUS…WHILE SOUTH DAKOTA WAS LAST WITH A D-PLUS. OVERALL, EDUCATION IN THIS COUNTRY IMPROVED BY A HALF-POINT OVER 2011.
