FORMER COP GUILTY IN BAR BEATING

FORMER ALTOONA POLICE OFFICER DUANE EICHENLAUB TOLD THE JURY HE WAS DEFENDING HIS WIFE’S HONOR WHEN HE BEAT HERMAN LARDIERI IN THE BATHROOM OF PELLEGRINE’S BAR IN 2010…AND HE FEARED FOR HIS LIFE WHEN EARL ESHELMAN TRIED TO BREAK UP THE RIGHT. BOTH LARDIERI AND ESHELMAN WERE LEFT WITH SERIOUS INJURIES. YESTERDAY, A JURY FOUND EICHENLAUB GUILTY ON AGGRAVATED ASSAULT AND CONSPIRACY CHARGES FOR TRYING TO COVER UP THE INCIDENT. FORMER COP ERIC KRINER PREVIOUSLY PLEADED GUILTY TO SIMPLE ASSAULT AND CONSPIRACY AND IS DUE FOR SENTENCING IN MARCH. EICHENLAUB IS FACING SUBSTANTIAL JAIL TIME WHEN HE’S SENTENCED APRIL 29TH.

HUNDREDS OF BOYS ABUSED?

ALTOONA ATTORNEY RICHARD SERBIN, WHO HAS BEEN REPRESENTING VICTIMS OF SEXUAL ABUSE SINCE 1987, TELLS THE ALTOONA MIRROR THAT FRANCISCAN BROTHER STEPHEN BAKER APPEARS TO BE THE MOST PROLIFIC CHILD PREDATOR HE’S DEALT WITH. IN THE PAST WEEK, 12 YOUNG MEN HAVE CONTACTED SERBIN ASKING HIM TO REPRESENT THEM…AND LAWYERS ARE SAYING BAKER MAY HAVE HAD HUNDREDS OF VICTIMS. HE PREVIOUSLY SETTLED WITH 11 MEN IN OHIO, BUT HAS NOT BEEN CRIMINALLY CHARGED. BAKER’S SUPERIOR AT ST. BERNADINE’S MONASTERY IN HOLLIDAYSBURG SAYS BAKER WAS REMOVED FROM THE MINISTRY IN 2000. 

MEANWHILE, GREENSBURG ATTORNEY SUSAN WILLIAMS HAS FILED A NOTICE IN CAMBRIA COUNTY COURT THAT A CIVIL LAWSUIT IS BEING FILED ON BEHALF OF VICTIMS 1, 2 AND 3 WHO ARE NOW IN THEIR 20’S. THEY CLAIMED THEY WERE ASSAULTED WHILE STUDENTS AT BISHOP MCCORT HIGH SCHOOL IN JOHNSTOWN.

SANDUSKY SCANDAL

PENN STATE HAS NAMED AN EASTERN PENNSYLVANIA COLLEGE ADMINISTRATOR TO BE ITS FIRST ATHLETICS INTEGRITY OFFICER. JULIE DEL GIORNO HAS BEEN CHIEF OF STAFF AT MORAVIAN COLLEGE AND ITS THEOLOGICAL SEMINARY. SHE WILL BEGIN HER NEW JOB ON APRIL 1ST. THE POST WAS CREATED TO COMPLY WITH NCAA SANCTIONS OVER THE SANDUSKY SCANDAL. DEL GIORNO WILL OVERSEE COMPLIANCE INVOLVING INTEGRITY, CIVILITY, ETHICS AND INSTITUTIONAL CONTROL AT PENN STATE. SHE PREVIOUSLY COACHED AT THE UNIVERSITY OF CENTRAL ARKANSAS AND WORKED AT THE U.S. MILITARY ACADEMY AT WEST POINT. DEL GIORNO HAS ALSO SERVED AS A COMMISSIONED OFFICER IN THE U.S. ARMY.

TRIAL ORDERED IN D-U-I FATALITY

IN CENTRE COUNTY COURT YESTERDAY, 29 YEAR OLD MATTHEW SHIRK OF BELLEFONTE WAS ORDERED TO STAND TRIAL ON CHARGES THAT HE WAS DRIVING DRUNK WHEN HE CAUSED AN CRASH THAT LEFT ONE PERSON DEAD AND 3 OTHERS, INCLUDING HIMSELF, BADLY INJURED. THE WRECK HAPPENED IN THE DECEMBER 2011 IN BURNSIDE TOWNSHIP. 24 YEAR OLD KELLY RIDER OF PORT MATILDA WAS KILLED. AN ACCIDENT RECONSTRUCTIONIST TESTIFIED THAT SHIRK’S PICKUP HAD OFF-ROAD TIRES. SHIRK REMAINS FREE ON 50-THOUSAND DOLLARS BAIL.

WITNESS AFRAID TO TESTIFY

JERMAINE SAMUEL OF ALTOONA IS ON TRIAL THIS WEEK FOR BEING ONE OF THE KEY PLAYERS IN THE DRUG RING OPERATING OUT OF THE CORNER BAR IN ALTOONA. KENNETH PINER, WHO IS ALREADY DOING JAIL TIME IN THE CASE, WAS SCHEDULED TO TESTIFY FOR THE PROSECUTION YESTERDAY, BUT REFUSED…SAYING HE AND HIS FAMILY HAVE RECEIVED THREATS. THE JUDGE SENTENCED PINER TO AN EXTRA 6 TO 12 MONTHS BEHIND BARS. PROSECUTORS SAY SAMUEL’S TRIAL WILL CONTINUE AND THEY ALSO PLAN TO TRY OTHER RINGLEADERS.

SPORTS SHOW POSTPONED

THE PRODUCERS OF THE EASTERN SPORTS AND OUTDOOR SHOW, SLATED TO BEGIN FEBRUARY 2ND AT THE PENNSYLVANIA FARM SHOW COMPLEX IN HARRISBURG, YESTERDAY ANNOUNCED THAT THE EVENT IS BEING POSTPONED DUE TO THE CONTROVERSY SURROUNDING ITS DECISION TO LIMIT THE SALE OR DISPLAY OF ASSAULT RIFLES AND EXTENDED AMMUNITION CLIPS. MORE THAN 300 VENDORS AND 35 SPEAKERS HAD ALREADY DECIDED TO PULL OUT OF THE SPORTS SHOW. NO WORD WHEN IT WILL BE RE-SCHEDULED, BUT TICKETBUYERS HAVE RECEIVED AN EMAIL PROMISING A REFUND. INFORMATION WILL BE POSTED ON THE EVENT’S WEBSITE. TOURISM OFFICIALS AT THE HERSHEY/HARRISBURG REGIONAL VISITORS BUREAU PREDICT AN ESTIMATED 44 MILLION DOLLAR LOSS IN DIRECT SPENDING FROM VENDORS AND ATTENDEES, WITH THE OVERALL IMPACT TO BE 80 MILLION IN LOSSES TO THE LOCAL ECONOMY.

ALTOONA SCHOOL DISTRICT AUDIT

THE ALTOONA MIRROR REPORTS THAT THE PENNSYLVANIA AUDITOR GENERAL’S OFFICE IS CONDUCTING AN AUDIT OF THE ALTOONA AREA SCHOOL DISTRICT FOLLOWING CLAIMS OF ILLEGAL PAY RAISES GIVEN TO SOME STAFF MEMBERS. DISTRICT SOLICITOR DAVE ANDREWS SAY HE’S ALSO LOOKING INTO THE ISSUE.
