CONNECTICUT TRAGEDY

PENN STATE AND LOCAL COMMUNITY MEMBERS ORGANIZED A VIGIL LAST NIGHT AT UNIVERSITY PARK TO REMEMBER THE VICTIMS OF FRIDAY’S SCHOOL SHOOTING IN NEWTOWN, CONNECTICUT. HUNDREDS OF CANDLES FILLED THE OLD MAIN LAWN. SENIOR KEVIN GALLAGHER’S 6 YEAR OLD COUSIN WAS ONE OF THE VICTIMS WHO DID NOT SURVIVE. THE PRINCIPAL OF SANDY HOOK ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, DAWN HOCHSPRUNG, WAS AMONG THE 27 VICTIMS IN FRIDAY’S SHOOTING…AND HER DAUGHTER LIVES IN MILLHEIM CENTRE COUNTY. BETH HOCHSPRUNG EWASKIEWICZ HAS GONE TO NEWTOWN, CONNECTICUT TO BE WITH HER FATHER. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS SAYS DAWN HOCHSPRUNG WAS KILLED WHILE TRYING TO OVERTAKE SUSPECTED SHOOTER ADAM LANZA.

GOVERNOR TOM CORBETT IS ORDERING PENNSYLVANIA STATE FLAGS TO FLY AT HALF-STAFF IN RESPONSE TO THE MASSACRE AT SANDY HOOK ELEMENTARY SCHOOL IN NEWTOWN, CONNECTICUT. HIS ORDER AFFECTS STATE FLAGS ON ALL PUBLIC BUILDINGS UNTIL SUNSET TOMORROW. CORBETT'S DIRECTIVE FOLLOWS PRESIDENT OBAMA'S ORDER THAT ALL U.S. FLAGS BE LOWERED.

FALLEN POLICE OFFICERS

PENNSYLVANIA RESIDENTS ARE ASKED TO REMEMBER AND HONOR FALLEN LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS BY DISPLAYING A BLUE LIGHT IN THEIR HOME OR OFFICE WINDOW DURING THE HOLIDAY SEASON. SINCE THE STATE POLICE DEPARTMENT WAS FOUNDED IN 1905, 94 MEMBERS HAVE BEEN KILLED IN THE LINE OF DUTY. THE MOST RECENT WAS IN OCTOBER 2012 WHEN TROOPER BLAKE COBLE OF BEAVER COUNTY DIED AFTER HIS PATROL CAR WAS STRUCK BY A TRACTOR TRAILER. PROJECT BLUE LIGHT WAS DEVELOPED BY A MISSOURI-BASED NON-PROFIT GROUP.

2 HOMES DESTROYED

A WOMAN AND HER 4 CHILDREN ARE HOMELESS AFTER A FIRE SATURDAY NIGHT IN BELLWOOD, BLAIR COUNTY. AUTHORITIES SAY A HOUSE IN THE 700 BLOCK OF EAST 9TH STREET CAUGHT FIRE A LITTLE BEFORE 11. NO ONE WAS HOME AT THE TIME AND THERE WERE NO INJURIES. FLAMES ALSO DAMAGED AN ADJACENT HOME, AND THERE IS NO WORD YET ON THE CAUSE. A STATE POLICE FIRE MARSHAL IS INVESTIGATING.

SOMERSET COUNTY FIRE CREWS WERE CALLED OUT SATURDAY AFTERNOON WHEN FIRE DESTROYED A HOME ON JEROME AVENUE IN JEROME. NO WORD ON ANY INJURIES AND THE INVESTIGATION CONTINUES.

VICTIM SERIOUSLY INJURED

18-YEAR-OLD DEREK FETTERS OF BELLEFONTE IS JAILED ON AGGRAVATED AND SIMPLE ASSAULT AND HARASSMENT CHARGES FOR SERIOUSLY INJURING ANOTHER MAN EARLY SUNDAY IN MILLHEIM. STATE POLICE AT ROCKVIEW SAY FETTERS ATTACKED A 22-YEAR-OLD MILLHEIM MAN IN A PARKING AREA OFF MILLS STREET. THE 2 HAD BEEN INVOLVED IN A CONFRONTATION AT A PARTY EARLIER SATURDAY EVENING. FETTERS WAS TAKEN TO CENTRE COUNTY CORRECTIONAL FACILITY. THE VICTIM WAS TAKEN TO THE HOSPITAL.

FLYING BEER KEG

A PENN STATE STUDENT IS FACING CHARGES AFTER LAUNCHING AN EMPTY BEER KEG OFF A 7TH-FLOOR BALCONY EARLY SATURDAY MORNING. STATE COLLEGE POLICE SAY IT CAUSED EXTENSIVE DAMAGE TO AN S-U-V PARKED BELOW AT THE PALMERTON ON WEST BEAVER AVENUE. AUTHORITIES BELIEVE ALCOHOL WAS A FACTOR.
