MORE ALLEGATIONS AGAINST FRANCISCAN BROTHER

NO CHARGES HAVE BEEN FILED AGAINST FRANCISCAN BROTHER STEPHEN BAKER WHO REPORTEDLY SETTLED IN OCTOBER WITH 11 MEN WHO CLAIMED HE ABUSED THEM WHILE THEY WERE CHILDREN IN OHIO. IN THE 1990’S, BAKER TAUGHT AND COACHED AT BISHOP MCCORT HIGH SCHOOL IN JOHNSTOWN…AND HE IS NOW LIVING UNDER SUPERVISION AT ST.  BERNADINE’S MONASTERY IN HOLLIDAYSBURG. DR. ROBERT HOATSON, PRESIDENT OF THE ADVOCACY GROUP “ROAD TO RECOVERY” SAYS SINCE HIS NEWS CONFERENCE LAST WEEK, A TOTAL OF 25 PEOPLE INCLUDING AT LEAST 10 FORMER BISHOP MCCORT STUDENTS HAVE COME FORWARD WITH NEW ALLEGATIONS. THE ALTOONA-JOHNSTOWN DIOCESE SAYS BAKER HAS HAD NO CONTACT WITH CHILDREN SINCE THEY RECEIVED A REPORT OF ALLEGED ABUSE IN 2011.

TEEN SHOOTER WILL NOT GO TO JAIL

16 YEAR OLD JESSE MCELHINNEY OF ALTOONA DIED THE DAY AFTER CHRISTMAS WHEN HE WAS ACCIDENTALLY SHOT BY HIS FRIEND. POLICE SAY THE OTHER TEEN JUST TURNED 18 BUT HE’S CHARGED AS A JUVENILE WITH INVOLUNTARY MANSLAUGHTER, AGGRAVATED ASSAULT, RECKLESSLY ENDANGERING ANOTHER PERSON AND OTHER OFFENSES. MCEHINNEY’S FAMILY PREVIOUSLY SAID THIS WAS A TRAGIC ACCIDENT AND THEY DIDN’T WANT THE SHOOTER TO FACE CHARGES. PROSECUTORS HAVE AGREED TO NO JAIL TIME AND A LENIENT SENTENCE.

FATAL CRASH IN CENTRE COUNTY

STATE POLICE IN CENTRE COUNTY SAY ONE MAN WAS KILLED AND 3 PEOPLE WERE INJURED IN AN ACCIDENT IN LIBERTY TOWNSHIP SUNDAY AFTERNOON. THE VICTIM LOST CONTROL OF HIS VEHICLE ON MARSH CREEK ROAD AND SLAMMED INTO AN ON-COMING CAR. A WOMAN IN HIS CAR SUSTAINED MODERATE INJURIES. TIMOTHY AND LAWRENCE CARTER, FROM THE OTHER VEHICLE BOTH SUSTAINED MINOR INJURIES. POLICE CONTINUE THEIR INVESTIGATION.

SMALL CHURCH FIRE

FIREFIGHTERS RESPONDED TO A SMALL, SMOULDERING FIRE AT ZION LUTHERAN CHURCH IN HOLLIDAYSBURG JUST BEFORE 9 SUNDAY MORNING. DAMAGE WAS MINIMAL. INVESTIGATORS SAY IT LOOKS LIKE SOMEONE WAS SMOKING OUTSIDE THE CHURCH AND ACCIDENTALLY SET SOME MULCH ON FIRE.

POLICE TASER ASSAULT SUSPECT

STATE POLICE TASERED DAVID HARRIS JUNIOR LATE SATURDAY NIGHT AFTER HE BROKE INTO HIS IN-LAW’S HOME IN TYRONE AND ASSAULTED HIS WIFE WITH A HUNTING KNIFE. THE WOMAN WAS STAYING THERE AFTER A FIGHT WITH HARRIS AND SHE WASN’T SERIOUSLY HURT. HER FATHER THEN HIT HARRIS IN THE FACE WITH THE BUTT OF A RIFLE. CHARGES AGAINST HARRIS INCLUDE BURGLARY, AGGRAVATED ASSAULT, AND RESISTING ARREST.

NEW PENN STATE TRUSTEES CHAIRMAN

PENN STATE'S BOARD OF TRUSTEES ELECTED 1973 GRADUATE AND POTATO FARMER KEITH MASSER AS THE NEW CHAIRMAN ON FRIDAY. HE REPLACES KAREN PEETZ WHO DID NOT SEEK RE-ELECTION. OVER THE NEXT YEAR, MASSER SAYS THE SCHOOL NEEDS TO ATTRACT A NEW PRESIDENT. THEY NEED TO RE-AFFIRM THEIR BOND WITH THE COMMONWEALTH OF PENNSYLVANIA, AND CREATE A SAFE ENVIRONMENT FOR EVERYONE ON PENN STATE'S CAMPUSES. STEPHANIE DIVINEY WAS ELECTED VICE-CHAIRMAN FOR 2013.
