CLOSING ALTOONA ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS

THE ALTOONA SCHOOL BOARD MEETS TONIGHT AT THE HIGH SCHOOL AT 6:15. THEY COULD DISCUSS THE POSSIBLE CLOSING OF WRIGHT AND WASHINGTON-JEFFERSON ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS. DISTRICT OFFICIALS SAY SHUTTING THEM DOWN COULD SAVE MORE THAN 1-POINT-5 MILLION DOLLARS A YEAR, BUT A NEWLY-FORMED PARENTS ORGANIZATION IS CONSIDERING LEGAL ACTION TO KEEP THE BOARD FROM CLOSING WASHINGTON-JEFFERSON. “PARENTS ENCOURAGING AND COMMUNITY SUPPORTING EDUCATION” OR “PEACE” CO-FOUNDER LORI KEHOE TELLS THE ALTOONA MIRROR SHE BELIEVES THE DISTRICT IS DISCRIMINATING BECAUSE THE AREA IS KNOWN AS A LOW-INCOME AREA.
