DEER SEASON BEGINS

MOST SCHOOLS IN OUR AREA ARE CLOSED TODAY FOR THE FIRST DAY OF PENNSYLVANIA’S 2 WEEK DEER SEASON. THE GAME COMMISSION ESTIMATES THAT 750-THOUSAND HUNTERS WILL BE IN THE WOODS. STARTING TODAY, HUNTERS CAN ONLY SHOOT BUCK. AFTER 5 DAYS, DOE CAN BE HARVESTED TOO. HUNTERS ARE REQUIRED TO WEAR FLORESCENT ORANGE MATERIAL ON THEIR HEAD, CHEST AND BACK. STARTING THIS YEAR, HUNTERS DON'T HAVE TO HAVE THEIR LICENSES TAGGED ON THE OUTSIDE OF THEIR CLOTHES, BUT THEY STILL NEED TO CARRY IT.

NEW RESTRICTIONS ARE IN PLACE FOR THIS YEAR'S DEER HUNT BECAUSE OF CHRONIC WASTING DISEASE. 2 DEER FROM AN ADAMS COUNTY FARM DIED FROM THE DISEASE EARLIER THIS YEAR. IN ORDER TO KEEP THE DISEASE FROM SPREADING TO OTHER WILD ANIMALS, THE STATE IS REQUIRING HUNTERS IN YORK AND ADAMS COUNTIES TO TAKE THEIR GAME TO A CHECKPOINT FOR A SAFETY INSPECTION. CHRONIC WASTING DISEASE IS NOT TRANSFERRED TO HUMANS, BUT HEALTH OFFICIALS ADVISE HUNTERS TO SHOOT ONLY HEALTHY DEER AND TO WEAR GLOVES WHEN HANDLING THE DEAD ANIMAL.

SUCCESSFUL HUNTERS ON OPENING DAY CAN HELP MAKE A DIFFERENCE FOR THE AREA’S HUNGRY. DEER MEAT CAN BE DONATED TO THE “HUNTERS SHARING THE HARVEST” PROGRAM WHICH THEN DISTRIBUTES IT TO MORE THAN 100 PENNSYLVANIA FOOD BANKS, SOUP KITCHENS, AND PANTRIES. THE PROGRAM ACCEPS ALL DONATIONS AND COVERS MOST OF THE PROCESSING COSTS.
