FUNERALS CONTINUE IN NEWTOWN -

THE WAKES AND FUNERALS CONTINUE FOR THE VICTIMS OF THE NEWTOWN, CONNECTICUT MASS MURDERS.  U.S. EDUCATION SECRETARY ARNE DUNCAN WAS AMONG THE MOURNERS AS CALLING HOURS WERE HELD FOR SANDY HOOK ELEMENTARY PRINCIPAL DAWN HOCHSPRUNG YESTERDAY.  ALSO, PAUL SIMON SANG "THE SOUNDS OF SILENCE" AT TEACHER VICTORIA SOTO'S FUNERAL, WHICH WAS ATTENDED BY HUNDREDS.  

GUN SALES UP -

CALLS FOR SWEEPING GUN RESTRICTIONS IN THE WAKE OF THE NEWTOWN, CONNECTICUT SCHOOL SHOOTINGS APPARENTLY ARE DRIVING SWEEPING SALES OF GUNS AT THE WORLD'S BIGGEST RETAILER.  BLOOMBERG NEWS REPORTS ONLINE SEARCHES FOR FIVE KINDS OF SEMI-AUTOMATIC RIFLES ON WALMART'S WEBSITE SHOW THE WEAPONS ARE OUT OF STOCK AT STORES IN FIVE STATES.  

CASEY SUPPORTS TOUGHER GUN LAWS

 U.S. SENATOR BOB CASEY SAYS HE'LL SUPPORT STRICTER GUN LAWS.  THE PENNSYLVANIA DEMOCRAT SAID HE SHIFTED HIS VIEWS ON THE ISSUE OF GUN CONTROL BECAUSE OF LAST WEEK'S MASSACRE IN NEWTOWN, CONNECTICUT. AFTER WINNING RE-ELECTION AS AN OPPONENT OF GUN CONTROL, CASEY SAID HE WOULD SUPPORT REINSTATING THE ASSAULT WEAPONS BAN AND THE BAN ON MAGAZINES THAT HOLD MORE THAN TEN ROUNDS OF AMMO.

 PATROLS ADDED TO ALTOONA SCHOOLS -

 altoona area school district administrators and principals met with representatives from area police, fire departments and blair county e-m-a on tuesday to review safety plans and procedures. altoona area elementary schools will now be included in daily patrols by altoona and logan township police departments and officers will also make periodic visits to all elementary schools in the district. physical security enhancements will also be added to certain schools. school officials say the police presence is not meant to alarm students or parents…it’s a security measure to protect the students.

 ALTOONA ACCEPTS RECOVERY PLAN –

 ON WEDNESDAY, ALTOONA CITY COUNCIL ACCEPTED AN ACT 47 RECOVERY PLAN. ONLY ONE COUNCILMAN VOTED AGAINST THE PLAN. TODAY’S ALTOONA MIRROR REPORTS THAT LOCAL UNION LEADERS ARE NOT HAPPY WITH THE PLAN, WHICH CALLS FOR FREEZING WAGES AND REDUCING BENEFITS AS WELL AS OTHER STRATEGIES FOR GENERATING REVENUE AND SAVING MONEY. THERE WILL BE A HEARING TOMORROW IN BLAIR COUNTY COURT CONCERNING THE CITY’S PETITION TO EXCEED THE STATE’S EARNED INCOME TAX CAP FOR GENERAL PURPOSES AND TO EXCEED THE STATE’S  SOFT CAP ON PROPERTY TAXES.

 FORMER COP IN COURT TODAY -

 FORMER ALTOONA POLICE OFFICER ERIC KRINER PLANS TO PLEAD GUILTY today TO LESSER CHARGES FOR HIS INVOLVEMENT IN A BEATING BACK IN 2010 AT PELLEGRINE’S LOUNGE. THE OTHER FORMER COP, DUANE EICHENLAUB, IS EXPECTED TO GO BEFORE A JURY IN JANUARY. THE OFFICERS WERE ACCUSED OF BEATING 2 MEN AFTER ONE OF THEM TOUCHED A COP’S WIFE…THEN TRYING TO COVER IT UP.

 CENTRE COUNTY DRUG BUST -

 THE CENTRE COUNTY DRUG TASK FORCE , ALONG WITH AGENTS FROM THE PENNSYLVANIA OFFICE OF THE ATTORNEY GENERAL, ARRESTED TWO MEN AT THE IMPERIAL 400 MOTEL ON SOUTH ATHERTON STREET IN STATE COLLEGE ON WEDNESDAY AND SEIZED 75 BAGS OF HEROIN AND 12 GRAMS OF MARIJUANA. 28-YEAR-OLD NATHAN BANK AND 31-YEAR-OLD DANIEL DADE FACE CHARGES OF POSSESSION WITH INTENT TO DELIVER, CRIMINAL CONSPIRACY AND POSSESSION OF A CONTROLLED SUBSTANCE.

CAMBRIA COUNTY ASSAULT -

 STATE POLICE IN EBENSBURG ARE INVESTIGATING AN ASSAULT ON STATION ROAD IN BLACKLICK TOWNSHIP, CAMBRIA COUNTY. POLICE SAY A 51-YEAR-OLD TWIN ROCKS WOMAN WAS ASSAULTED OUTSIDE HER RESIDENCE AT ABOUT 9:30 WEDNESDAY MORNING.  THE WOMAN WAS HIT IN THE HEAD FROM BEHIND AND THEN WAS HIT IN THE FACE WHILE SHE WAS LYING ON THE GROUND. THE ACTOR WAS WEARING A BLACK HOODIE, WHICH COVERED HIS FACE AND DARK SWEATPANTS. IF YOU HAVE ANY INFORMATION, CALL EBENSBURG STATE POLICE AT 471-6500.

PSU BEGINS PAYMENTS TODAY -

 PENN STATE PRESIDENT RODNEY ERICKSON’S ANNUAL SALARY HAS INCREASED TO $600,000 A YEAR. ERICKSON MADE $515,000 IN HIS FIRST YEAR AS UNIVERSITY PRESIDENT.ACCORDING TO A PENN STATE NEWS RELEASE, THE “PERFORMANCE-BASED” RAISE IS IN LINE WITH HIS EMPLOYMENT AGREEMENT WITH THE UNIVERSITY AND MERITED ACCORDING TO MEMBERS OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES.
