 TIGHTER GUN CONTROL TOUGH SELL IN PENNSYLVANIA

 THOUGH THE DRUMBEAT TOWARDS TIGHTER GUN-CONTROL LAWS IN PENNSYLVANIA IS GETTING LOUDER, SOME OFFICIALS SAY ACTUALLY IMPOSING THOSE LAWS WILL BE A TREMENDOUS CHALLENGE. IN LIGHT OF LAST WEEK'S MASS SCHOOL SHOOTINGS IN CONNECTICUT SOME POLITICIANS HAVE BEEN CALLING FOR BANS ON ASSAULT WEAPONS IN ADDITION TO TOUGHER LAWS FOR OTHER KINDS OF GUNS.  A RETIRED POLITICAL SCIENTIST FROM PENN STATE UNIVERSITY SAYS HE'D BE "SURPRISED" SHOULD ANY SIGNIFICANT LEGISLATION IN PENNSYLVANIA CAME FROM THE NEWTOWN, CONNECTICUT SHOOTINGS.  MOST POLITICIANS FROM PENNSYLVANIA SAY THEY'RE MORE INTERESTED IN CLEANING UP THE STATE'S EXISTING GUN LAWS.

 ACT 47 DECISION IN ALTOONA

 ALTOONA CITY COUNCIL WILL CONSIDER ADOPTING THE REVISED ACT 47  FINANCIAL RECOVERY PLAN TODAY. AFTER RECEIVING THE FIRST DRAFT LAST MONTH, LEADERS CAME UP WITH 27 PAGES OF PROPOSED REVISIONS. LAST WEEK, THE ACT 47 COORDINATOR AGREED TO DROP A PROPOSAL TO HAVE THE FIRE DEPARTMENT TAKE OVER OPERATIONS OF AMED AMBULANCE SERVICE.

 STATE COLLEGE ROBBERY –

 STATE COLLEGE POLICE ARE INVESTIGATING A REPORT OF AN ARMED ROBBERY THAT HAPPENED AT ABOUT 7:30 ON MONDAY EVENING AT AN APARTMENT AT 820 WEST COLLEGE AVENUE. POLICE SAY THAT TWO BLACK MEN ROBBED FOUR MEN IN THE APARTMENT AT GUN POINT AND TIED THEM UP BEFORE FLEEING. BOTH SUSPECTS WORE DARK CLOTHING AND MASKS. A POSSIBLE THIRD SUSPECT WAS WAITING OUTSIDE IN A CAR. ANYONE WITH INFORMATION SHOULD CALL 234-7150.

 MAN ARRESTED AFTER CHASE –

 A HOLLIDAYSBURG MAN WAS ARRESTED ON TUESDAY AFTERNOON AFTER A CHASE IN CAMBRIA COUNTY. 25-YEAR-OLD ADAM DAVID WEIGAND LED POLICE ON A CHASE FROM CRESSON TO PATTON AFTER CRESSON POLICE ATTEMPTED TO STOP HIM FOR A TRAFFIC VIOLATION. HIS GIRLFRIEND AND THEIR CHILD WERE IN THE CAR DURING THE CHASE. WEIGAND WAS ARRESTED ON VARIOUS CHARGES AND TAKEN INTO CUSTODY. WEIGAND IS ON PAROLE FOR VARIOUS CHARGES IN CAMBRIA COUNTY. HE IS ALSO WANTED IN SOUTH CAROLINA FOR MARIJUANA POSSESSION AND DRIVING WITHOUT A LICENSE.

 PRELIMINARY HEARING TODAY -

 CAREER CRIMINAL JERMAINE MORGAN OF ALTOONA IS DUE AT ANOTHER PRELIMINARY HEARING TODAY ALONG WITH HIS WIFE, LATASHA. SHE WAS CHARGED WITH DRUNK DRIVING EARLIER THIS MONTH. JERMAINE WALKED TO THEIR PORCH WEARING AN EMPTY HOLSTER AND POLICE FOUND A HANDGUN THERE.WHEN POLICE WENT INSIDE TO CHECK ON THE CHILDREN, THEY FOUND AROUND 10 POUNDS OF MARIJUANA AND MORE THAN  $7,000 IN CASH.

 CAMBRIA COUNTY MAN IN COURT TODAY -

 33 YEAR OLD BENJAMIN SHOENFELD OF PORTAGE FACES ATTEMPTED MURDER CHARGES AT A PRELIMINARY HEARING TODAY IN CAMBRIA COUNTY COURT. LAST WEEK, SHOENFELD ALLEGEDLY FIRED SEVERAL SHOTS THROUGH THE FRONT DOOR OF A HOME AT 608 MAKIN STREET AND HIT DONALD LEWIS THE 3RD IN THE ARM. POLICE BELIEVE THE SHOOTING WAS DRUG RELATED.

 ACCUSED CAR THIEVES HAVE HEARING –

 2 ACCUSED CAR THIEVES…CAUGHT THANKS TO FACEBOOK…ARE DUE AT A PRELIMINARY HEARING TODAY IN ALTOONA. POLICE POSTED A PICTURE SHOWING THE MAKE, MODEL AND COLOR OF A STOLEN MINI-VAN ON DECEMBER 3RD. THEY ASKED THE PUBLIC TO LOOK OUT FOR THE VEHICLE AND GOT A CALL LATER THAT DAY FROM A WOMAN WHO SPOTTED THE VAN AND FOLLOWED 19 YEAR OLD FATIMAH GUTHRIE AND 19 YEAR OLD HILLARY OTT. COPS LATER FOUND THE VAN’S KEY HIDDEN IN A WALL AT OTT’S RESIDENCE.

 NEW CHAIRPERSON FOR  PSU BOARD OF TRUSTEES –

 PENN STATE’S BOARD OF TRUSTEES CHAIRWOMAN KAREN PEETZ WILL NOT SEEK RE-ELECTION TO THAT POSITION, DUE TO HER APPOINTMENT AS PRESIDENT OF B-N-Y MELLON, WHICH WILL BEGIN ON JANUARY 1ST. PEETZ WILL CONTINUE TO SERVE ON THE BOARD AND ON LEADERSHIP COMMITTEES. ACCORDING TO A RELEASE FROM PENN STATE, THE ELECTION OF A NEW CHAIRPERSON AND OTHER OFFICERS WILL HAPPEN AT THE NEXT BOARD OF TRUSTEES MEETING ON JANUARY 18TH.

 HEARING FOR SANDUSKY DEFENSE TEAM –

 CENTRE COUNTY JUDGE JOHN CLELAND WILL HOLD A HEARING ON JANUARY 10TH IN BELLEFONTE FOR JERRY SANDUSKY’S DEFENSE TEAM. ACCORDING TO COURT DOCUMENTS, THE HEARING WILL SERVE AS ONE OF THE FIRST STEPS TOWARDS AN APPEAL.

 FOLKS TRAVELING TODAY IN THE 400 BLOCK OF WEST COLLEGE AVENUE INS TATE COLLEGE SHOULD WATCH OUT FOR CREWS REMOVING A TREE IN THAT AREA BETWEEN 7 A.M. AND 3 P.M. CREWS WILL CLOSE THE LEFT LANE FOR THE PROJECT.
