HEARING IN DEADLY ARSON

ALTOONA POLICE SAY 62 YEAR OLD AARON DISHONG OF EAST FREEDOM WAS UPSET THAT HIS EX-GIRLFRIEND HAD STARTED DATING A BLACK MAN AND THAT’S WHY HE WANTED TO KILL HER. DISHONG ALLEGEDLY SET FIRE TO A HOUSE AT 113 SOUTH 2ND STREET IN ALTOONA LAST MONTH, KILLING 3 YEAR OLD DARREL ETCHISON JUNIOR. HIS GIRLFRIEND WAS NOT ACTUALLY INSIDE AT THE TIME AND LITTLE D-J’S MOTHER AND 2 YEAR OLD SISTER ESCAPED BY JUMPING OFF THE PORCH ROOF. BRANDY ETCHISON BROKE HER BACK. AT YESTERDAY’S PRELIMINARY HEARING, DISHONG WAS ORDERED TO STAND TRIAL ON MURDER AND ARSON CHARGES. HE REMAINS IN THE BLAIR COUNTY PRISON WITHOUT BAIL.

FALL VICTIM TRANSFERRED TO A PITTSBURGH HOSPITAL

THE SISTER OF MICHAEL REED OF JOHNSTOWN TELLS THE TRIBUNE DEMOCRAT HE’S IN STABLE CONDITION AT A PITTSBURGH HOSPITAL WITH SERIOUS HEAD AND BACK INJURIES. TUESDAY, REED STRUCK A LIVE POWER LINE WHILE WORKING ON A ROOF IN KERNVILLE. HE FELL TO THE GROUND AND ALSO SUFFERED BURNS TO HIS HANDS AND FACE.

MISSING TEEN

STATE COLLEGE POLICE ARE LOOKING FOR A MISSING 14-YEAR-OLD BOY. RYAN WILLIAMS WAS LAST SEEN AT ABOUT 10:30 TUESDAY NIGHT. HE IS WHITE, 5 FOOT 9, APPROXIMATELY 130 POUNDS, WITH BLUE EYES AND BLOND HAIR. RYAN’S RED BMX BIKE ALSO IS MISSING AND HE MAY BE WEARING A BLACK, HOODED JACKET WITH LETTERING THAT SAYS “WOODWARD”. ANYONE WITH INFORMATION SHOULD CALL POLICE AT 234-71-50.

SANDUSKY SCANDAL

JERRY SANDUSKY WANTS HIS 59-THOUSAND DOLLAR ANNUAL PENSION BACK. ACCORDING TO PENN LIVE, ONE HIS ATTORNEYS FILED A 5 PAGE LETTER TO THE STATE EMPLOYEES RETIREMENT SYSTEM LAST MONTH, EXPLAINING THAT SANDUSKY’S PENSION RIGHTS STARTED BACK IN 1969 BEFORE THE FORFEITURE ACT WAS IN PLACE AND HE WAS NO LONGER A PENN STATE EMPLOYEE IN 2004 WHEN THE ACT WAS AMENDED TO MAKE SEX CRIMES AGAINST STUDENTS A CAUSE FOR FORFEITURE. THE SERS SYSTEM WITHDREW SANDUSKY’S PENSION IN OCTOBER AFTER HE WAS SENTENCED TO 30 TO 60 IN STATE PRISON. OFFICIALS RULED THAT HE REMAINED A DE-FACTO EMPLOYEE AFTER HIS 1999 RETIREMENT.

PRELIMINARY HEARINGS WERE SCHEDULED NEXT THURSDAY FOR GRAHAM SPANIER, TIM CURLEY, AND GARY SHULTZ, BUT THEY HAVE BEEN CONTINUED, AS WELL AS THE JANUARY 7TH JURY SELECTION AND TRIAL IN DAUPHIN COUNTY COURT. ACCORDING TO THE PENNSYLVANIA COURT DOCKET, THE HOLD WAS PLACED ON THE COURT DATES PENDING RESOLUTION OF RECENTLY FILED MOTIONS. ONE OF THE UNRESOLVED ISSUES INCLUDES FORMER PENN STATE GENERAL COUNSEL CYNTHIA BALDWIN WHO THE MEN BELIEVE MISREPRESENTED HERSELF AS THEIR COUNSEL WHEN THEY TESTIFIED BEFORE THE GRAND JURY. BALDWIN SAYS SHE WAS REPRESENTING PENN STATE’S INTERESTS.

ASSISTANT FIRE CHIEF CHARGED WITH EMBEZZLING

IN JOHNSTOWN, RICHLAND TOWNSHIP ASSISTANT FIRE CHIEF JASON OBER HAS BEEN CHARGED WITH STEALING OVER 24-THOUSAND DOLLARS. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT AGREED TO BUY A UTILITY TRUCK FOR 12-THOUSAND DOLLARS, BUT OBER  ALLEGEDLY WROTE TWO 12-THOUSAND DOLLAR CHECKS TO HIMSELF AND HIS WIFE. THE INVESTIGATION IS CONTINUING. OBER HAS REPORTEDLY NOT BEEN ACTIVE IN THE DEPARTMENT FOR ABOUT A YEAR.  

STATE BUDGET CUTS & LAYOFFS?

A TOP AIDE TO GOVERNOR TOM CORBETT WOULD NOT SAY WEDNESDAY WHETHER THE GOVERNOR WILL ASK LAWMAKERS FOR DEEP SPENDING CUTS WHEN HE PRESENTS A BUDGET IN FEBRUARY. BUDGET SECRETARY CHARLES ZOGBY SAYS LAYOFFS MAY BE NECESSARY TO HELP OFF-SET RISING COSTS FOR PUBLIC EMPLOYEE PENSIONS AND MEDICAID. CORBETT WILL DELIVER HIS BUDGET ADDRESS FEBRUARY 5TH.
