CONNECTICUT TRAGEDY

FOLLOWING THE TRAGIC ELEMENTARY SCHOOL SHOOTING IN CONNECTICUT, LOCAL OFFICIALS ARE REVIEWING SECURITY MEASURES. YESTERDAY, BELLEFONTE’S SUPERINTENDENT MET WITH LAW ENFORCEMENT TO TALK ABOUT WHAT CRISIS PROCEDURES ARE IN PLACE AND WHAT COULD BE CHANGED. ALL BUILDINGS WILL BE PERMANENTLY LOCKED DURING SCHOOL HOURS AND ALL VISITORS WILL NEED TO PROVIDE PHOTO ID. STATE COLLEGE DISTRICT SUPERINTENDENT BOB O’DONNEL SENT A LETTER TO PARENTS FRIDAY AFTERNOON SAYING EACH SCHOOL WILL ADD AN INCREASED POLICE PRESENCE AND MORE MEASURES ARE POSSIBLE. THE ALTOONA AREA SCHOOL DISTRICT RAN A “SHOOTING DRILL” FOR FIRST RESPONDERS LAST AUGUST AT THE HIGH SCHOOL AND JUNIOR HIGH. A DRILL MAY BE PLANNED SOON AT AN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL.

LOCAL SCHOOL LOCKED DOWN BRIEFLY

PLEASANT VALLEY ELEMENTARY SCHOOL IN ALTOONA WAS ON LOCKDOWN FOR A WHILE YESTERDAY AS POLICE TRIED TO CATCH 20 YEAR OLD ZACHERY MOORE WHO WAS WANTED FOR QUESTIONING IN CONNECTION WITH AN ASSAULT IN THE CITY LAST WEEK. ACCORDING TO THE COPS, MOORE MAY BE HOMELESS AND IS WANTED ON 3 OUTSTANDING WARRANTS. HE FLED INTO THE WOODS BEHIND THE SCHOOL AND THE LOCKDOWN LASTED UNTIL STUDENTS WERE DISMISSED FOR THE DAY. ANYONE WITH INFORMATION ON MOORE’S WHEREABOUTS SHOULD CALL 911.

DRIVER SERIOUSLY INJURED

57 YEAR OLD JACQUE PRICE OF ROARING SPRING SUFFERED MAJOR INJURIES AND WAS TRAPPED IN HIS S-U-V FOLLOWING A CRASH YESTERDAY AFTERNOON ON ROUTE 867 IN TAYLOR TOWNSHIP, BLAIR COUNTY. STATE POLICE SAY PRICE RAN OFF THE ROAD AND SHEERED OFF SEVERAL FENCE POSTS…THEN STRUCK A LARGE TREE HEAD-ON. RESCUE CREWS HAD TO EXTRICATE PRICE FROM THE WRECKAGE AND HE WAS TAKEN TO ALTOONA REGIONAL TRAUMA CENTER.

LOOKING FOR ARSONIST

BELLEFONTE POLICE AND FIRE CREWS ARE INVESTIGATING 2 WEEKEND ARSONS. EARLY SUNDAY MORNING, AN EXPLOSION ROCKED THE AREA AROUND THE 300 BLOCK OF EAST CHERRY LANE. THE BLAST CAME FROM A DETACHED GARAGE AND A COUPLE OF VEHICLES PARKED ACROSS THE STREET WERE ALSO SET ON FIRE. NO ONE WAS INJURED.

ESCAPEE GETS MORE JAIL TIME

A JUDGE YESTERDAY SENTENCED 40 YEAR OLD LARRY THOMAS TO SPEND UP TO 3 YEARS IN A STATE PRISON FOR ESCAPING WHILE ON WORK DUTY OUTSIDE OF THE CENTRE COUNTY PRISON BACK IN OCTOBER. THOMAS PLEADED GUILTY TO ESCAPE AND THEFT BY UNLAWFUL TAKING FOR STEALING A PICKUP TRUCK IN WALKER TOWNSHIP TO MAKE HIS GETAWAY. HE WAS IN JAIL FOR ILLEGALLY POSSESSING A FIREARM.

ARREST IN ATTEMPTED KIDNAPPING

AFTER RECEIVING SEVERAL TIPS, POLICE IN INDIANA COUNTY HAVE ARRESTED 58 YEAR OLD ANDREW EDWARDS FOR TRYING TO KIDNAP A 17 YEAR OLD GIRL ALONG MARION ROAD IN WHITE TOWNSHIP SATURDAY AFTERNOON. THE GIRL TOLD POLICE EDWARDS GRABBED HER FROM BEHIND AND SAID “COME WITH ME.” SHE FOUGHT BACK AND GOT AWAY.

BLAIR COUNTY TAX HIKE

BLAIR COUNTY COMMISSIONERS ARE SCHEDULED TO ADOPT A 2013 BUDGET TODAY. EARLIER THIS MONTH, A JUDGE GAVE THEM PERMISSION TO LEVY 27-POINT-459 MILLS OF REAL ESTATE TAXES. THAT’S A 3-POINT-5 MILL INCREASE AND THE COUNTY WILL EXCEED 25 MILLS FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE 2010. BLAIR COUNTY’S LAST TAX HIKE WAS IN 2007.

STATE COLLEGE HIGH SCHOOL RENOVATION

PRELIMINARY DISCUSSIONS CONTINUE TOWARD RENOVATING STATE COLLEGE AREA HIGH SCHOOL. LAST NIGHT, THE BOARD HEARD FROM THE ARCHITECTURAL FIRM AND PUT TOGETHER A “COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT ACTION TEAM” WHICH WILL EDUCATE COMMUNITY MEMBERS AND ALLOW THE PUBLIC TO GET INVOLVED AND PROVIDE FEEDBACK. OCTOBER OF NEXT YEAR WOULD BE THE EARLIEST THE PROJECT COULD GO TO A VOTER REFERENDUM.
