FORMER COP WILL GO ON TRIAL

IN JUST 4 HOURS YESTERDAY, A BLAIR COUNTY JURY WAS SEATED FOR THE TRIAL OF FORMER ALTOONA POLICE OFFICER DUANE EICHENLAUB WHO IS ACCUSED OF BEATING 2 MEN AT PELLEGRINE’S LOUNGE IN MAY OF 2010…THEN CONSPIRING TO COVER UP THE INCIDENT. FORMER COP ERIC KRINER PREVIOUSLY PLEADED GUILTY TO A REDUCED CHARGE OF SIMPLE ASSAULT. HIS ATTORNEY SAYS EICHENLAUB WAS JUST TRYING TO DEFEND HIMSELF WHEN HE ATTACKED THE MAN WHO HAD INAPPROPRIATELY TOUCHED HIS WIFE. TESTIMONY IS SCHEDULED TO BEGIN NEXT TUESDAY.

NOT GUILTY OF FIRST DEGREE MURDER

THE FAMILY OF 21 YEAR OLD J-QUAN LEWIS OF JOHNSTOWN IS NOT HAPPY WITH YESTERDAY’S VERDICT. A CAMBRIA COUNTY JURY FOUND MARQUIS NEAL GUILTY OF 3RD DEGREE MURDER AND HIS COUSIN, ANTHONY HARVEY, GUILTY OF VOLUNTARY MANSLAUGHTER. LEWIS WAS SHOT 6 OR 7 TIMES, WITH THE LAST SHOT FIRED INTO HIS HEAD IN 2011 OUTSIDE JOHNSTOWNS’ OAKHURST HOMES. ASSISTANT CAMBRIA COUNTY DISTRICT ATTORNEY TAMMY BERNSTEIN SAID SHE’S DISAPPOINTED SHE WASN’T ABLE TO PROVE PRE-MEDITATED MURDER. NEAL IS LOOKING AT UP TO 40 YEARS BEHIND BARS AND HARVEY COULD GET 20.

MORE JAIL TIME FOR CHILD MOLESTER

A BLAIR COUNTY JUDGE YESTERDAY SENTENCED 57 YEAR OLD FRANK SCHROYER OF TYRONE TO 10 TO 20 YEARS IN PRISON AFTER HE PLEADED NO CONTEST TO MOLESTING A 9 YEAR OLD GIRL WHO LIVED IN HIS APARTMENT COMPLEX. LAST WEEK, A HUNTINGDON COUNTY JUDGE SENTENCED SCHROYER TO 10 TO 20 YEARS IN A SEPARATE CASE OF CHILD RAPE. HE PREVIOUSLY SPENT 15 YEARS BEHIND BARS FOR CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE. HE IS A LIFETIME REGISTRANT UNDER MEGAN’S LAW.

PRISON TRANSFERS TO BEGIN

STATE CORRECTIONS OFFICIALS ANNOUNCED LAST WEEK THAT THE STATE PRISONS AT CRESSON AND GREENSBURG WILL BE CLOSED IN A FEW MONTHS… AND NOW THEY SAY THE FIRST OF THE 15-HUNDRED INMATES FROM S-C-I CRESSON WILL START TRANSFERRING THIS WEEK…MOST OF THEM TO S-C-I BENNER OUTSIDE OF STATE COLLEGE. MUCH OF THE STAFF WILL ALSO MOVE TO THAT LOCK-UP. MEANWHILE, A PUBLIC HEARING IS SET FOR JANUARY 31ST AT 6:30 AT THE CRESSON FIRE HALL. IT’S BEING ORGANIZED BY STATE REPRESENTATIVE GARY HALUSKA AND WILL ALSO INVOLVE OTHER LOCAL LAWMAKERS.

FLU QUARANTINE

DUE TO THE FLU OUTBREAK ACROSS THE COUNTRY, INCLUDING HERE IN OUR AREA, ONE BUILDING THAT HOUSES PATIENTS AT THE HOLLIDAYSBURG VETERANS HOME IS UNDER QUARANTINE.
THE STATE DEPARTMENT OF MILITARY AND VETERANS AFFAIRS SAYS THERE ARE 4 CONFIRMED CASES OF THE FLU AT ARNOLD HALL, SO  PATIENTS AND STAFF THERE ARE BEING KEPT AWAY FROM OTHER RESIDENTS. VISITATION TO ARNOLD HALL AND TRAVEL BY PATIENTS LIVING THERE IS RESTRICTED. ALL RESIDENTS AND STAFF AT ARNOLD HALL HAVE ALL BEEN OFFERED THE FLU MEDICINE TAMIFLU AS A PREVENTIVE AND NO NEW PATIENTS ARE BEING ADMITTED TO THAT BUILDING.

SCHOOL NEWS

THE STATE COLLEGE SCHOOL BOARD TOOK A STEP FORWARD LAST NIGHT IN A 2-YEAR LONG CONTRACT DISPUTE WITH THE UNION REPRESENTING 600 TEACHERS. THE BOARD VOTED TO ACCEPT AN APPOINTED FACT-FINDER’S RECOMMENDATIONS REGUARDING THE COLLECTIVE BARGAINING AGREEMENT. THE EXACT ISSUES ARE KEPT CONFIDENTIAL AND THE TEACHERS’ UNION HAS UNTIL THURSDAY TO VOTE ON WHETHER THE FACT-FINDER'S REPORT SHOULD BE THE BASIS FOR THEIR NEW CONTRACT.

THE STATE COLLEGE SCHOOL BOARD ALSO VOTED LAST NIGHT TO SETTLE WITH THE ROYAL BANK OF CANADA OVER A 2006 INTEREST RATE SWAP. THE BANK HAD AGREED TO FINANCE A HIGH SCHOOL RENOVATION PROJECT THAT WAS LATER SHELVED. THE DEAL WILL COST THE DISTRICT TAXPAYERS 9 MILLION DOLLARS. SUPERINTENDENT ROBERT O’DONNEL SAYS THE MONEY WILL COME FROM A RESERVE ACCOUNT WITHOUT A HIT TO EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS.

THE ALTOONA MIRROR REPORTS THAT THE HOLLIDAYSBURG SCHOOL BOARD HAS VOTED TO SELL ITS ADMINISTRATIVE AND TAX OFFICE BUILDING ON JACKSON STREET. THE PRESBYTERIAN HOME, WHICH IS NEXT DOOR, WILL PAY 2 MILLION DOLLARS FOR THE PROPERTIES. THE BOARD PLANS TO BUILD A NEW ADMINISTRATION BUILDING AT A MINIMUM COST…POSSIBLY ON THE AUDITORIUM SIDE OF THE HIGH SCHOOL PARKING LOT.

PENNSYLVANIA PARENTS WHO RECENTLY BROUGHT A NEW BABY HOME NEED TO TAKE A LOOK AT THE  BIRTH CERTIFICATE.THE STATE DEPARTMENT OF VITAL STATISTICS, WHICH IS TRANSITIONING TO NEW RECORDS SOFTWARE, ADMITS THAT A COMPUTER GLITCH CAUSED ABOUT 500 CERTIFICATES TO BE PRINTED WITH THE WRONG NAME OF THE FATHER. A LETTER HAS BEEN SENT TO ALL THOSE AFFECTED AND THEY CAN GET AN AMENDED BIRTH CERTIFICATE. THE SOFTWARE VENDOR HAS SINCE CORRECTED THE ERROR.
