“IT’S NOT ABOUT MONEY”

PENN STATE FOOTBALL COACH BILL O’BRIEN SPOKE TO THE MEDIA YESTERDAY AND DENIED REPORTS THAT HE’S GETTING A RAISE TO STAY. O’BRIEN SAID HIS DECISION CAME DOWN TO HIS FAMILY, HIS PLAYERS, HIS COACHING STAFF, AND THE DIRECTION IN WHICH THE PROGRAM IS HEADED. ACCORDING TO RUMORS, HE INTERVIEWED WITH THE CLEVELAND BROWNS AND PHILADELPHIA EAGLES LAST WEEK, BUT O’BRIEN SAYS IT WAS NOTHING MORE THAN CONVERSATIONS.  OTHER SPECULATION WAS THAT O’BRIEN RECEIVED 1-POINT-3 MILLION DOLLARS TO STAY AT PENN STATE. HE SAYS “IT’S NOT ABOUT MONEY. IT’S ABOUT MAKING SURE THAT PENN STATE, THE ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT AND FOOTBALL PROGRAM DOES EVERYTHING WE CAN DO IN OUR POWER TO MAKE THIS PLACE THE BEST IT CAN BE FOR OUR STUDENT ATHLETES.”

HOATSON SAYS PENN STATE WAS RIGHT TO AGREE TO THE NCAA SANCTIONS, INCLUDING 60 MILLION DOLLARS IN FINES.

REWARD OFFERED IN CAMBRIA COUNTY HOMICIDE

CAMBRIA COUNTY CRIME STOPPERS IS OFFERING A 4-THOUSAND DOLLAR CASH REWARD FOR INFORMATION LEADING TO THE ARREST AND CONVICTION OF THE 2 BLACK MEN WHO SHOT 38 YEAR OLD ROBERT WILLIAMS AT HIS LYDIA STREET HOME IN RICHLAND TOWNSHIP THURSDAY NIGHT. WILLIAMS DIED SATURDAY. POLICE BELIEVE ROBBERY WAS THE MOTIVE AND SAY A YOUNG CHILD WAS HOME AT THE TIME, BUT WAS UNINJURED. ANYONE WITH INFORMATION SHOULD CALL 1-800-281-16-80.

MURDER TRIAL OPENING

IN CAMBRIA COUNTY COURT, JURY SELECTION CONTINUES TODAY FOR THE MURDER TRIAL OF MARQUIS NEAL AND HIS COUSIN, ANTHONY HARVEY, BOTH OF PHILADELPHIA. THE 2 ARE CHARGED IN THE OCTOBER 2011 SHOOTING DEATH OF J-QUAN LEWIS OUTSIDE JOHNSTOWN’S OAKHURST HOMES. POLICE SAY NEAL WAS THE GUNMAN AND HARVEY DROVE THE GET-A-WAY CAR. TESTIMONY IS SLATED TO BEGIN TOMORROW IN DOWNTOWN JOHNSTOWN BECAUSE THAT IS WHERE MOST OF THE WITNESSES ARE FROM. 

SOMERSET MAN STILL MISSING

SEARCH CREWS ARE FOCUSING ON THE YOUGHIOGHENY RIVER AS THEY CONTINUE LOOKING FOR 29 YEAR OLD JEREMY WALKER OF SOMERSET WHO DISAPPEARED AFTER PARKING HIS CAR AT OHIOPYLE STATE PARK. WALKER’S FAMILY HASN’T HEARD FROM HIM SINCE NEW YEAR’S EVE. THE PARK COVERS MORE THAN 20-THOUSAND ACRES AND INCLUDES WHITEWATER RAPIDS ON THE RIVER.

FIRE AT JOHNSTOWN METAL PLANT

JOHNSTOWN FIRE CREWS RESPONDED TO THE NORTH AMERICAN HOGANAS PLANT IN MOXHAM AROUND 6:15 MONDAY EVENING WHEN SOME MOLTEN METAL LEAKED OUT FROM THE METAL PLANT, CAUSING A FURNACE TO EXPLODE AND FLAMES TO BREAK OUT. 4 EMPLOYEES MANAGED TO CUT THE POWER TO PREVENT FURTHER DAMAGE, THEN ABOUT 20 WORKERS EVACUATED FROM THE PLANT. A DAMAGE ESTIMATE IS NOT YET AVAILABLE, BUT THE COMPANY PLANS TO BE BACK IN BUSINESS AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.

BLAIR COUNTY ASSISTANT DISTRICT ATTORNEY WADE KAGARISE YESTERDAY ANNOUNCED HIS CANDIDACY FOR BLAIR COUNTY COMMON PLEAS COURT JUDGE. ALTOONA ATTORNEY DAVE ANDREWS ALSO THREW HIS HAT INTO THE RING.

THE CITY OF ALTOONA IS NOW ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS FOR THE POSITION OF POLICE OFFICER WITH THE ALTOONA POLICE DEPARTMENT. THOSE APPLYING MUST HAVE SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETED A PENNSYLVANIA ACT 120 BASIC TRAINING PROGRAM. APPLICATIONS ARE AVAILABLE IN THE PERSONNEL OFFICE AT CITY HALL.

BRIDGE WORK NEAR CRESSSON

PENNDOT SAYS TRAFFIC WILL BE REDUCED TO A SINGLE LANE ON ROUTE 22 EAST NEAR CRESSON TODAY WHILE EMERGENCY REPAIRS ARE MADE TO THE BRIDGE THAT SPANS NORFOLK SOUTHERN RAILROAD LINES. THE WORK SHOULD BE COMPLETED TODAY.

5 MILLION DOLLAR GIFT

PENN STATE HAS RECEIVED A 5 MILLION DONATION FROM JEFF AND KELLIE HEPPER OF TEXAS THAT WILL GO TOWARD SCHOLARSHIPS FOR STUDENTS WITH FINANCIAL NEEDS. OFFICIALS SAY THE MONEY WILL GO INTO THE TRUSTEE MATCHING SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM. IN TRIBUTE, PENN STATE WILL NAME THE FITNESS CENTER AT RECREATION HALL AFTER JEFF HEPPER’S PARENTS, CLIF AND JEAN, WHO MET AS STUDENTS AT PENN STATE AND GRADUATED IN 1947.
