BISHOP MCCORT PARENTS WANT ANSWERS

MORE THAN 300 BISHOP MCCORT STUDENTS, ALUMNI, PARENTS, AND SUPPORTERS CAME OUT IN SUPPORT OF SUSPENDED PRINCIPAL KEN SALEM AT A PUBLIC MEETING LAST NIGHT. THEY WANT TO KNOW EXACTLY WHY HE WAS PLACED ON LEAVE FRIDAY. THE SCHOOL’S BOARD OF TRUSTEES GAVE NO REASON, BUT SALEM’S ATTORNEY SAYS IT’S DUE TO THE SCANDAL INVOLVING FRANCISCAN BROTHER STEPHEN BAKER WHO IS ALLEGED TO HAVE MOLESTED DOZENS OF BOYS WHILE TEACHING AND COACHING AT BISHOP MCCORT. BEFORE COMMITTING SUICIDE IN JANUARY, BAKER SETTLED WITH 11 YOUNG MEN IN OHIO. THE PARENTS GROUP PLANS TO ORGANIZE AS A NONPROFIT TO SUPPORT THE SCHOOL.

CAR SLAMS INTO POST OFFICE

A 25 YEAR OLD TYRONE MAN IS IN THE BLAIR COUNTY PRISON AFTER CRASHING A CAR INTO THE TIPTON POST OFFICE DURING A POLICE CHASE YESTERDAY MORNING. STATE POLICE IN HOLLIDAYSBURG SAY THE CHASE BEGAN WHEN THE SUSPECT TOOK OFF IN HIS VEHICLE WHILE THEY WERE RESPONDING TO AN ALLEGED DOMESTIC VIOLENCE INCIDENT. THE SUSPECT…WHO IS CURRENTLY ON STATE PAROLE…FLED ON FOOT AND WAS CAUGHT IN THE NEARBY WOODS. THE POST OFFICE SUSTAINED SEVERE DAMAGE AND REMAINS CLOSED. D-U-I AND MANY OTHER CHARGES ARE PENDING.

SENTENCING FOLLOWING METHADONE-RELATED FATALITIES

IN CAMBRIA COUNTY COURT TODAY, 42 YEAR OLD METHADONE PATIENT MICHAEL SHERWOOD OF NORTHERN CAMBRIA WILL LIKELY RECEIVE A SENTENCE OF 5 TO 12 YEARS IN A STATE PRISON. HE PLEADED GUILTY TO HOMICIDE BY VEHICLE WHILE UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF A CONTROLLED SUB¬STANCE AND OTHER CHARGES. IN SEPTEMBER 2010, SHERWOOD’S PICKUP STRUCK A CAR ON NICKTOWN HILL IN NORTHERN CAMBRIA, KILLING LOIS DAVIS OF ALVERDA. HER HUSBAND, RICHARD, DIED 2 WEEKS LATER. ANOTHER PASSENGER WAS ALSO INJURED AND SHERWOOD SUFFERED A BROKEN NECK.

2 FIRES

DAMAGE IS ESTIMATED AT 600-THOUSAND DOLLARS FOLLOWING A FIRE SUNDAY NIGHT AT A STEEL-FRAME STRUCTURE AT RAPID WAYS TRUCKING SUPPLY COMPANY IN HYDE, CLEARFIELD COUNTY. A STATE POLICE FIRE MARSHAL IS INVESTIGATING, BUT DOESN’T BELIEVE THE BLAZE IS SUSPICIOUS.  NO ONE WAS INSIDE AND THERE WERE NO INJURIES.

A PET DOG DIED YESTERDAY MORNING WHEN A FIRE DAMAGED A HOME ON KILLEN SCHOOL ROAD NEAR NICKTOWN, CAMBRIA COUNTY. THE HOME IS OWNED AND OCCUPIED BY THE FINNIGAN FAMILY, AND NO ONE WAS THERE WHEN THE FLAMES BROKE OUT INSIDE AN INTERIOR WALL.

BUDGET CUTS WILL AFFECT PA

THE DEFENSE DEPARTMENT SAID MILITARY SITES IN PENNSYLVANIA WILL BE HEAVILY AFFECTED BY THE AUTOMATIC FEDERAL SPENDING CUTS NOW IN EFFECT. ACCORDING TO THE ASSOCIATED PRESS, A LETTER TO GOVERNOR TOM CORBETT SAID THE ARMY WILL LOSE 7 MILLION DOLLARS IN BASE OPERATIONS FUNDING ACROSS THE STATE, INCLUDING CUTS AT CARLISLE BARRACKS AND FORT INDIANTOWN GAP. DEPOT OPERATIONS AT TOBYHANNA AND LETTERKENNY COULD BE CUT BY UP TO 751 MILLION DOLLARS. IN ADDITION, THE STATE'S 26-THOUSAND CIVILIAN DEFENSE WORKERS COULD HAVE 22 DAYS OF UNPAID FURLOUGHS, AMOUNTING TO A 20 PERCENT PAY CUT.
GOVERNMENT-WIDE BUDGET REDUCTIONS TOTAL 85 BILLION.

PROTECTING GUN RIGHTS

STATE SENATOR JOHN EICHELBERGER YESTERDAY ANNOUNCED HIS PLAN TO INTRODUCE LEGISLATION TO SAFEGUARD THE FIREARMS PROTECTIONS CONTAINED IN THE PENNSYLVANIA CONSTITUTION AGAINST ATTEMPTS BY THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT TO DILUTE THEM. HIS BILL WOULD MAKE IT CLEAR THAT THE COMMONWEALTH WILL NOT ASSIST THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT IN WATERING DOWN INDIVIDUAL RIGHTS PROTECTED BY ITS CONSTITUTION.  THE BILL WOULD PROHIBIT THE USE OF ANY STATE OR LOCAL RESOURCES, INCLUDING PERSONNEL, BUILDINGS, AND EQUIPMENT, TO ENFORCE ANY NEW FEDERAL RESTRICTION ON THE PURCHASE OR OWNERSHIP OF ANY FIREARMS AND ACCESSORIES WHICH ARE CURRENTLY LEGAL PRODUCTS IN PENNSYLVANIA.

CHANGES THIS DEER SEASON

THE STATE GAME COMMISSION YESTERDAY ANNOUNCED THAT TIGHTER REGULATIONS WILL BE IN PLACE THIS YEAR AS THEY TRY TO STOP THE SPREAD OF CHRONIC WASTING DISEASE IN THE STATE’S DEER POPULATION. THE 3 DEER THAT TESTED POSITIVE WERE KILLED IN FREEDOM AND FRANKSTOWN TOWNSHIPS IN BLAIR COUNTY AND ONE IN SOUTH WOODBURY TOWNSHIP, BEDFORD COUNTY. C-W-D DOES NOT APPEAR TO AFFECT HUMANS, EVEN THOSE WHO EAT VENISON FROM AN INFECTED ANIMAL.
