2 KILLED

2 PEOPLE DIED AND 3 CHILDREN WERE INJURED IN A WRECK YESTERDAY AFTERNOON ON ROUTE 220 IN LAMAR TOWNSHIP, CLINTON COUNTY. TOWNSHIP POLICE SAY THOMAS ZIERENBERG OF ALLISON PARK CROSSED THE CENTER LINE AND STRUCK A MINI-VAN DRIVEN BY COURTNEY REBUCK OF LOGANTON. BOTH DRIVERS WERE PRONOUNCED DEAD AT THE SCENE. A 13-YEAR-OLD FEMALE, AN 8-YEAR-OLD MALE, AND A 4-YEAR-OLD FEMALE FROM THE MINI-VAN WERE FLOWN TO GEISINGER MEDICAL CENTER IN DANVILLE.

GERHOLT SAYS IT WAS AN ACCIDENT

42 YEAR OLD JOHN GERHOLT OF MOUNT UNION, HUNTINGDON COUNTY, IS SERVING A LIFE SENTENCE AFTER PLEADING NO CONTEST TO THE 2008 SHOOTING DEATH OF HIS ESTRANGED WIFE, KAREN, IN THE EVERETT MCDONALDS PARKING LOT. YESTERDAY, HE FIRED HIS ATTORNEYS AS PART OF HIS CASE TO WITHDRAW HIS PLEA AND GO TO TRIAL. GERHOLT CLAIMS THE SHOOTING WAS AN ACCIDENT A AND HE WAS BRIBED AND THREATENED INTO TAKING THE PLEA DEAL. BEDFORD COUNTY DISTRICT ATTORNEY BILL HIGGINS SAYS HE’S CONSIDERING AGREEING TO GERHOLT’S REQUEST TO TOSS THE PLEA. IF HE GOES TO TRIAL, GERHOLT WILL FACE THE DEATH PENALTY. 

CHILD HAS MENINGITIS

A SPOKESMAN  FOR THE ALTOONA-JOHNSTOWN ROMAN CATHOLIC DIOCESE CONFIRMS THAT A STUDENT AT ST. ROSE OF LIMA ELEMENTARY SCHOOL IN ALTOONA HAS BEEN DIAGNOSED WITH MENINGITIS. OFFICIALS SAY THE BOY CONTRACTED MENINGITIS DUE TO A PERSONAL MEDICAL CONDITION AND IT IS NOT CONTAGIOUS. AS A PRECAUTION, THE SCHOOL WAS GIVEN A THOROUGH CLEANING. THERE'S NO WORD ON THE CHILD'S CONDITION.

FLU OUTBREAK

DUE TO THE FLU OUTBREAK, ALTOONA REGIONAL HEALTH SYSTEM IS MODIFYING HOSPITAL VISITING GUIDELINES TO PROTECT PATIENTS, HEALTH CARE PROVIDERS, AND THE PUBLIC. ALL VISITORS MUST BE AT LEAST 18 AND A MEMBER OF THE PATIENT’S IMMEDIATE FAMILY OR A CAREGIVER FOR THE PATIENT. ONLY 2 VISITORS AT A TIME ARE PERMITTED. ALL VISITORS TO MATERNITY MUST ALSO WEAR A SURGICAL MASK. ANYONE FEELING ILL SHOULD NOT VISIT A HOSPITAL PATIENT, ESPECIALLY IF THEY HAVE SIGNS OR SYMPTOMS OF A COLD OR THE FLU.

SANDUSKY SCANDAL

PENN STATE UNIVERSITY IS NOW TRYING TO HAVE MIKE MCQUEARY'S 4-MILLION DOLLAR "WHISTLEBLOWER LAWSUIT" THROWN OUT. UNIVERSITY ATTORNEYS FILED PRELIMINARY OBJECTIONS TO THE SUIT YESTERDAY. MCQUEARY TESTIFIED BEFORE A GRAND JURY AND CLAIMED HE SAW JERRY SANDUSKY IN A SHOWER WITH A YOUNG BOY BACK IN 2001. HE WAS LATER FIRED AND MCQUEARY IS SUING FOR LOST WAGES AND DAMAGES. PENN STATE SAYS MCQUEARY WASN'T DISCRIMINATED AGAINST.

STATE FARM INSURANCE WILL NOT PAY FOR JERRY SANDUSKY’S DEFENSE OR AWARDS FROM ANY CIVIL SUITS. SANDUSKY AND HIS WIFE, DOTTIE, WITHDREW CLAIMS AGAINST THE COMPANY IN DISTRICT COURT IN WILLIAMSPORT. STATE FARM HAD SOUGHT A COURT DECLARATION THAT THE HOMEOWNERS POLICY DID NOT PROVIDE COVERAGE FOR SANDUSKY’S DEFENSE.
THE INSURANCE COMPANY ALSO HAD REJECTED SANDUSKY’S CLAIMS FOR PAYMENT OF HIS DEFENSE IN 2 CIVIL CASES FILED IN PHILADELPHIA. SANDUSKY IS APPEALING HIS CONVICTION AND 30 TO 60 YEAR PRISON SENTENCE.

PRISON GUARD SUSPENDED

THE CENTRE DAILY TIMES REPORTS THAT A SUSPENDED CORRECTIONS OFFICER AT THE STATE PRISON AT ROCKVIEW HAS BEEN CHARGED WITH SEXUALLY ASSAULTING A CONVICTED KILLER AND AUTHORITIES HAVE D-N-A EVIDENCE. 54 YEAR OLD MARLIN FREEMAN OF RAMEY ALLEGEDLY THREATENED THAT THE INMATE WOULD LOSE HIS JANITORIAL JOB OR WOULD FACE SOLITARY CONFINEMENT IF HE DID NOT COMPLY. THE INCIDENTS TOOK PLACE IN THE PRISON’S CHAPEL FROM 2009 THROUGH APRIL OF LAST YEAR. THE INMATE HAS SINCE BEEN TRANSFERRED TO ANOTHER PRISON. HE HAS ALSO FILED A LAWSUIT AGAINST FREEMAN AND SEVERAL OTHER PRISON EMPLOYEES WHO ALLEGEDLY DID NOTHING TO STOP THE ASSAULTS.

THE AMERICAN LUNG ASSOCIATION’S “STATE OF TOBACCO CONTROL 2013” REPORT WAS RELEASED TODAY AND IT SAYS PENNSYLVANIA FELL SHORT IN ADEQUATELY FUNDING PROGRAMS TO PROTECT CHILDREN AND CURB TOBACCO-RELATED DISEASE IN 2012. THE NATIONAL INSTITUTE ON MONEY IN STATE POLITICS SAYS PRELIMINARY DATA SHOWS THAT TOBACCO MANUFACTURERS AND RETAILERS GAVE 53-POINT-4 MILLION DOLLARS TO STATE CANDIDATES FOR OFFICE, POLITICAL PARTIES AND TO OPPOSE TOBACCO-RELATED BALLOT MEASURES DURING THE 2011-2012 ELECTION CYCLE.THIS FIGURE INCLUDES SPENDING OVER 46 MILLION TO DEFEAT CALIFORNIA’S INITIATIVE TO INCREASE THE CIGARETTE TAX BY $1 PER PACK. PENNSYLVANIA RECEIVES 1-POINT-4 BILLION IN TOBACCO-RELATED REVENUE ANNUALLY, BUT SPENDS JUST 11 PERCENT OF WHAT THE CENTERS FOR DISEASE CONTROL AND PREVENTION RECOMMENDS TO FUND TOBACCO PREVENTION AND QUIT SMOKING PROGRAMS.

THE NATIONAL AVERAGE FOR A GALLON OF REGULAR UNLEADED IS $3.30, BUT WESTERN PENNSYLVANIA GAS PRICES REMAIN UNCHANGED THIS WEEK AT $3.52. ALTOONA-AREA DRIVERS ARE STILL PAYING $3.59.
