DEADLY WRECK

ONE DRIVER IS DEAD AFTER A CAR/TRACTORTRAILER CRASH ALONG ROUTE 22 NEAR HUNTINGDON JUST MINUTES BEFORE MIDNIGHT. STATE POLICE SAY THE CAR STRUCK A DEER…THEN CROSSED THE CENTERLINE AND SLAMMED INTO THE SEMI. CREWS SPENT THE LAST FEW HOURS CLEANING UP BETWEEN NUMERS HOLLOW ROAD AND SUGAR GROVE ROAD. THE CAR’S DRIVER WAS KILLED, BUT THE VICTIM’S NAME HAS NOT YET BEEN RELEASED.

DRIVER AIRLIFTED

27 YEAR OLD JONATHAN COPENHAVER OF SHIRLEYSBURG WAS FLOWN TO UPMC ALTOONA FOLLOWING A CRASH SATURDAY MORNING ON AUGHWICK CREEK ROAD IN CROMWELL TOWNSHIP, HUNTINGDON COUNTY. STATE POLICE SAYS COPENHAVER LOST CONTROL OF HIS CAR, HIT A TREE, AND THEN ROLLED DOWN AN EMBANKMENT. THE VEHICLE LANDED ON ITS ROOF IN THE CREEK. COPENHAVER WAS NOT WEARING A SEAT BELT. HE WAS LISTED IN SERIOUS CONDITION ON SUNDAY.

$100,000 FIRE IN CAMBRIA COUNTY

SATURDAY AFTERNOON, NEIGHBORS ACTED QUICKLY AND HELPED SAVE A HOUSE WHEN A FIRE BROKE OUT ON SPRUCE STREET IN SANKERTOWN BORO. FIRE CREWS SAY THE BLAZE STARTED IN THE KITCHEN AREA, BUT THEY HAVEN’T PINNED DOWN THE EXACT CAUSE. NO ONE WAS HOME AT THE TIME AND DAMAGE IS ESTIMATED AT 100-THOUSAND DOLLARS.

MURDER TRIAL WILL GO TO JURY

A JURY SHOULD BEGIN DECIDING THE FATE OF FORMER CAMBRIA COUNTY PRISON INMATE WILLIAM CRAMER BY THIS AFTERNOON. HE’S CHARGED WITH KILLING HIS CELLMATE IN 2012. FRIDAY, ANOTHER INMATE TESTIFIED THAT CRAMER WROTE HIM A LETTER SAYING HE HAD STRANGLED WILLIAM SHERRY WITH A BEDSHEET. THE LETTER WAS SIGNED WITH 2 SWASTIKAS AND THE WORDS “PEARL KINGS” INDICATING A WHITE SUPREMECY GROUP.

BUSY HOMECOMING WEEKEND

PENN STATE’S HOMECOMING WEEKEND…AND BIG WIN OVER MICHIGAN…MADE FOR A VERY BUSY FEW DAYS FOR STATE COLLEGE POLICE. COPS MADE 34 ARRESTS FROM FRIDAY NIGHT INTO SATURDAY. MOST OF THEM FOR UNDERAGE DRINKING, PUBLIC DRUNKENNESS, AND DISORDERLY CONDUCT. 4 PEOPLE HAD TO BE TAKEN TO THE HOSPITAL FOR ALCOHOL OVERDOSES…AND 3 WERE TAKEN TO THE HOSPITAL FOR INJURIES FROM ASSAULTS. 19 YEAR OLD CLAUDIUS TAYLOR OF MARYLAND…A PENN STATE HARRISBURG STUDENT…IS CHARGED IN CONNECTION WITH ASSAULTING AND ROBBING 2 WOMEN EARLY SUNDAY MORNING. HE’S JAILED ON 100-THOUSAND DOLLARS BOND.

WARNACO CLOSING

RUMORS STARTED 8 MONTHS AGO THAT THE WARNACO DISTRIBUTION FACILITY IN DUNCANSVILLE WILL BE SHUTTING DOWN, BUT NO ONE IS SURE EXACTLY WHEN. MARTY MARASCO, THE PRESIDENT AND C-E-O OF THE ALTOONA/BLAIR COUNTY DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION, TELLS THE ALTOONA MIRROR HE HAS NOT RECEIVED ANY CORRESPONDENCE FROM P-V-H CORPORATION, THE COMPANY THAT ACQUIRED WARNACO GROUP BACK IN FEBRUARY…BUT THE SHUTDOWN IS EXPECTED TO BE COMPLETED BY MARCH. MORE THAN 200 PEOPLE WORK THERE NOW. P-V-H PREVIOUSLY CLOSED THE HUNTINDON WARNACO PLANT, AFFECTING 125 EMPLOYEES.

GOVERNMENT SHUTDOWN CONTINUES

SEVERAL DOZEN PEOPLE RALLIED OUTSIDE ALTOONA’S VAN ZANDT MEDICAL CENTER TO PROTEST THE CLOSING OF WAR MEMORIALS AND MONUMENTS NATIONWIDE. THE LOCAL ORGANIZERS LAID A WREATH AT THE BOTTOM OF THE WALL THAT HEALS IN HONOR OF ALL VETERANS WHO SERVED. WHAT WAS CALLED THE "MILLION VETS MARCH" CONVERGED YESTERDAY ON THE WORLD WAR 2 MEMORIAL IN WASHINGTON DC WHERE VETERANS AND OTHERS REMOVED BARRICADES. SOME OF THE DEMONSTRATORS THEN HEADED TO THE FRONT GATE OF THE WHITE HOUSE TO CONTINUE THEIR PROTEST.

GOVERNOR IN JOHNSTOWN

GOVERNOR TOM CORBETT IS SCHEDULED TO BE IN JOHNSTOWN TONIGHT AS THE KEYNOTE SPEAKER AT THE VETERAN COMMUNITY INITIATIVES’ SALUTE TO VETERANS DINNER. THE PENNSYLVANIA ARMY NATIONAL GUARD’S 1-104TH ATTACK RECONNAISSANCE BATTALION, WHICH RECENTLY RETURNED FROM AFGHANISTAN, WILL BE HONORED GUESTS AT THE EVENT AT THE PASQUERILLA CONFERENCE CENTER DOWNTOWN.
