CURBING GUN VIOLENCE

“RIOTING” STUDENTS DUE IN COURT

PRELIMINARY HEARINGS ARE SCHEDULED TODAY FOR 13 underage PEnn state altoona students INVOLVED in what Police say was a riot last saturday afternoon at the nittany pointe apartments. as many as 800 people were partying and then began throwing glass bottles at officers, screaming obscenities, and being unruly. ONE STUDENT WHO WAS NOT PARTICIPATING IN THE PARTY REFUSED TO GO INTO HIS APARTMENT AND ALLEGEDLY RESISTED ARREST. HE WAS HIT WITH A TASER. some witnesses say police went too far in that case.

JURY CONVICTS DEALER

KENNETH PINER OF ALTOONA WAS ORIGINALLY SENTENCED TO 19 to 38 years in a state prison, but HE was allowed to withdraw his guilty plea and go to trial. YESTERDAY, A BLAIR COUNTY JURY NEEDED ONLY 2 HOURS OF DELIBERATIONS BEFORE CONVICTING HIM OF 28 DRUG-RELATED OFFENSES. PINER CLAIMS HE SOLD small amountS of cocaine and crack TO SUPPORT HIS OWN HABIT…but THAT he was not part of the major drug ring operating out of the corner bar and grill. SENTENCING IS SET FOR JUNE 4TH…AND PINER IS ALREADY PLANNING HIS APPEAL.

FIRE WAS ACCIDENTAL

GINA HILLEGAS AND HER 5 CHILDREN WERE LEFT HOMELESS WHEN A FIRE DESTROYED THEIR HOME IN Windber Tuesday…NOW INVESTIGATORS SAY THE BLAZE STARTED IN THE KITCHEN AND IT has been ruled accidental. Windber Fire Department is setting up a fund to help THE FAMILY. Donations can be sent to the Gina Hillegas Fire Fund at any Somerset Trust bank branch.

BUS CATCHES FIRE

A TOUR BUS WENT UP IN FLAMES TUESDAY ALONG ROUTE 219 IN BRADFORD. THE FULLINGTON TRAILWAYS BUS WAS CARRYING A GROUP OF MOSTLY SENIOR CITIZENS HOME TO CLEARFIELD AFTER A DAY TRIP TO SENECA ALLEGHENY CASINO IN NEW YORK. 2 PEOPLE WERE TAKEN TO THE LOCAL HOSPITAL WITH SMOKE INHALATION, BUT NO ONE WAS SERIOUSLY INJURED.

SOLDIERS KILLED IN AFGHANISTAN

2 Pennsylvania National Guard soldiers were killed in a helicopter crash IN AFGHANISTAN Tuesday. Chief Warrant Officer 3 Matthew Ruffner, from Harrisburg, and Chief Warrant Officer 2 Jarett Yoder, from Mohnton, Berks County, were flying an Apache helicopter during a reconnaissance mission when IT WENT DOWN. Officials do not believe tHIS was an enemy attack, But the investigation CONTINUES.

PATERNOS DIDN’T RECOGNIZE SIGNS OF ABUSE

SUE Paterno AND HER SON, SCOTT, WERE GUEST SPEAKERS YESTERDAY at the Pennsylvania Family Support Alliance breakfast in Harrisburg. The ORGANIZATION IS PUSHING FOR a better way to report abuse, and to educate more people on the warning signs. SCOTT Paterno saYS he believes Joe Paterno would have stopped Jerry Sandusky IF HE HAD HAD BETTER TRAINING. AND Sue Paterno says her family was too naive to realize the signs of abuse AND HER CHILDREN AND GRANDCHILDREN WERE AROUND SANDUSKY OFTEN. Scott Paterno ALSO TOLD THE CROWD THAT his father wrote a note to his family before he died. It said – QUOTE -- "Maybe the silver lining in the scandal will be as a society, we will become more aware of child sexual victimization".

SINCE CONGRESS REFUSED TO STEP IN, The U-S Postal Service IS BACKPEDALING AND NOW SAYS Saturday mail deliveries WILL CONTINUE AFTER AUGUST. THE AGENCY PLANS TO re-open negotiations with unions to lower labor costs. OFFICIALS WILL ALSO consider raising mail prices.
