JOHNSTOWN POLICE SAY A SUSPECT IS IN CUSTODY AFTER A shooting Wednesday afternoon. ABOUT 2:30, COPS were called to THE Giant Eagle parking lot in the West End. One man suffered a serious leg wound was taken to the hospital…THEN POLICE learned the suspected GUNMAN was inside a NEARBY apartment on Fairfield Avenue. THE SPECIAL EMERGENCY RESPONSE TEAM WAS called in TO EVACUATE MORE THAN A DOZEN RESIDENTS…THEN THEY MOVED IN AND TOOK The suspect into custody shortly before 5:30. his name was not released and charges are pending.

APARTMENT BUILDING DESTROYED

no one was injured, but a dog died yesterday when an apartment building caught fire at 221 nichols street in clearfield. officials say 4 apartment units burned. The State Police Fire Marshall is investigating the cause of the blaze.

TRUCKS COLLIDE HEAD-ON

IN CLEARFIELD COUNTY YESTERDAY, 2 DRIVERS SUFFERED MODERATE INJURIES WHEN A BOX TRUCK AND A COAL TRUCK COLLIDED ALONG ROUTE 219 NEAR MAHAFFEY. State Police say Jeffrey Cox Of Johnstown swerved to miss a car and hit THE COAL TRUCK head-on. Terry Crissman OF DuBois WAS ABLE TO GET OUT OF HIS truck right before it CAUGHT fire. Both men were flown from the scene TO THE HOSPITAL.

hollidaysburg officials tell the altoona mirror that test samples taken from a bedford street construction site in the gaysport neighborhood have confirmed the presence of petroleum-related chemicals in the soil and groundwater. a department of environmental protection spokeswoman says the levels aren’t deadly, but contact or ingestion wouldn’t be adviseable. D-e-p officials will be there august 5th to try and determine the extent of the contamination and begin an investigation into the source.  if the source cannot be found, d-e-p will pay to remove and replace the contaminated soil.

COPS GOT A TIP FROM A WITNESS AND SEARCHED MCCUNE’S RESIDENCE WHERE THEY FOUND items related to THE HOLD-UP. MCCUNE REPORTEDLY CONFESSED AND TOLD POLICE HE AND HIS WIFE WERE OUT OF WORK AND FACING EVICTION. A PRELIMINARY HEARING IS SET FOR AUGUST 6TH AND MCCUNE IS ALSO FACING CHARGES FOR PREVIOUSLY WRITING BAD CHECKS.

3 Bedford County residents have been indicted on federal charges stemming from a JanUARY 28TH burglary and theft of 31 handguns from  Saxton OUTDOOR SUPPLY. Garrett Sherlock and Joshua Faircloth ALLEGEDLY BROKE IN AND TOOK THE GUNS…THEN POLICE RECEIVED A TIP THAT THEY WERE ON THEIR WAY TO BALTIMORE TO SELL OR TRADE THE GUNS FOR DRUGS. AFTER A POLICE CHASE AND CRASH, THE MEN WERE TAKEN TO A BALTIMORE HOSPITAL. KELLY Foster is charged as an accomplice.

VOTER I-D CHALLENGE IN COURT

Even as the court case against Pennsylvania's voter ID law continues, THE PENNSYLVANIA AFL-CIO says over 35-thousand people stayed away from the polls last year because of confusion over the measure. The UNION released figures yesterday. The state did not enforce the voter ID law LAST year after the Commonwealth Court ordered a delay, but the union said publicity over the law lead to confusion for voters. The court case against the ID law will enter its 9th day today.

GOVERNOR COMING TO BEDFORD SPRINGS

GovERNOR Tom Corbett and more than 100 political supporters are planning to gather at the Bedford Springs resort for a weekend event being headlined by New Jersey GovERNOR Chris Christie.
Corbett’s campaign manager, Mike Barley, saYS it’s an opportunity for the Republican governor’s supporters to discuss the upcoming campaign and enjoy speeches by Christie, Pennsylvania SenATOR Pat Toomey and conservative commentator Fred Barnes. Corbett held a similar event last year.
