WHO IS KILLING DUCKS?

SOMEBODY IS TARGETING DUCKS AT SPRING DAM PARK IN ROARING SPRING. GAME COMMISSION WILDLIFE CONSERVATION OFFICER ALBERT ZELLNER TELLS THE ALTOONA MIRROR THAT AT LEAST 3 DUCKS HAVE BEEN KILLED AND SEVERAL MORE ARE EXPECTED TO DIE AFTER BEING HIT BY SHARPENED WOODEN STICKS, STEEL BLOWGUN DARTS, OR 28 INCH ARROWS. BIRDWATCHERS FIRST REPORTED THE CRIMES MORE THAN 2 WEEKS AGO. ROARING SPRING BORO POLICE HAVE JURISDICTION OVER THE PARK, BUT THE GAME COMMISSION HAS AUTHORITY OVER MIGRATORY BIRDS. WHEN THE SUSPECTS ARE CAUGHT, THEY COULD GET UP TO 6 MONTHS IN JAIL AND THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS IN FINES.

SANDUSKY SCANDAL

APPEARING ON NBC’S TODAY SHOW WEDNESDAY, DOTTIE SANDUSKY SAID SHE WAS “SHOCKED” TO HEAR THE GUILTY VERDICTS AGAINST HER HUSBAND, JERRY, AND SHE REMAINS ABSOLUTELY CONVINCED THAT HE IS INNOCENT. SHE ACCUSED THE VICTIMS OF BEING MOTIVATED BY MONEY AND INDICATED SHE FELT BETRAYED BY SOME WHO SHE SAID WERE CLOSE FAMILY FRIENDS THAT TURNED ON HER AND HER HUSBAND. JERRY SANDUSKY’S DEFENSE LAWYER IS ASKING THE STATE’S SUPREME COURT TO TAKE UP HIS APPEAL. LAST YEAR, THE STATE SUPERIOR COURT DENIED THE APPEAL. HE IS SERVING A 30-YEAR MINIMUM SENTENCE IN THE MAXIMUM-SECURITY STATE PRISON IN GREENE COUNTY.

ACCUSED KIDNAPPER WAIVES HEARING

IN CAMBRIA COUNTY COURT YESTERDAY, 32 YEAR OLD BELINDA HANCOCK WAIVED CHARGES TO TRIAL INCLUDING KIDNAPPING AND INTERFERING WITH THE CUSTODY OF A CHILD. HANCOCK IS ACCUSED OF TAKING HER 3-YEAR OLD GOD-DAUGHTER FROM JOHNSTOWN AND MOVING TO THE CAPITAL. U-S MARSHALS ARRESTED HER IN JANUARY IN WASHINGTON D-C. KAYADA MARTIN IS NOW IN THE CUSTODY OF HER GRANDMOTHER. HANCOCK’S PUBLIC DEFENDER SAYS SHE HAD THE AUTHORITY FROM THE PARENTS TO HAVE THE CHILD.

FIRE IN ALTOONA

FIRE DESTROYED A 3-STORY HOUSE AT THE INTERSECTION OF WESTWOOD PARK ROAD AND JUNIATA GAP ROAD IN ALTOONA LAST NIGHT. THE BLAZE BROKE OUT AROUND 7:30 AND NO ONE WAS INJURED. THE INVESTIGATION CONTINUES INTO THE CAUSE.

COUNTRY CLUB FIRE WAS AN ACCIDENT

ON FEBRUARY 23RD, THE DUBOIS COUNTRY CLUB BURNED DOWN…AND NOW INVESTIGATORS WITH THE STATE POLICE AND BUREAU OF ALCOHOL, TOBACCO AND FIREARMS SAY THE BLAZE HAS BEEN RULED ACCIDENTAL. VIDEO SURVEILLANCE SHOWS THE FIRE BROKE OUT IN A STORAGE ROOM AND SMOLDERED FOR SEVERAL HOURS BEFORE GETTING OUT OF CONTROL. DAMAGE WAS ESTIMATED AT 2-POINT-5 MILLION DOLLARS.

APPEALING REASSESSMENT

BLAIR COUNTY IS MAKING PLANS FOR ITS FIRST REASSESSMENT SINCE 1958…AND THE ALTOONA MIRROR SAYS A CONSULTING ATTORNEY HAS TOLD OFFICIALS TO BRACE FOR AS MANY AS 6-THOUSAND APPEALS. LAWYER JANET BURKARDT SAYS HER PREDICTION IS BASED ON THE TYPICAL 10-PERCENT OF APPEALS FOR EACH REASSESSMENT. THE COUNTY IS PLANNING A PUBLIC KICK-OFF MEETING, PROBABLY IN JUNE, TO EDUCATE AND INFORM RESIDENTS ABOUT THE REASSEMENT.

NO END TO PENELEC LOCK OUT

REPRESENTATIVES OF PENELEC AND THE UNION REPRESENTING ABOUT 140 LOCKED OUT WORKERS RETURNED TO THE BARGAINING TABLE YESTERDAY, BUT THEY TELL THE ALTOONA MIRROR NO AGREEMENT WAS REACHED. THIS WAS THE 5TH SESSION WITH A FEDERAL MEDIATOR IN PITTSBURGH SINCE THE LOCK OUT BEGAN IN NOVEMBER. BOTH SIDES BELIEVE SOME PROGRESS WAS MADE AND MORE TALKS ARE PLANNED.
