GOOD NEWS/BAD NEWS

ALTOONA POLICE CHIEF JANICE FREEHLING SAYS OVERALL CRIME WAS DOWN 9-PERCENT IN THE CITY LAST YEAR, BUT SERIOUS CRIME WAS UP 8-PERCENT….AND SHE THINKS IT’S BECAUSE THE CITY LOST SEVERAL OFFICERS UNDER ACT 47 AND SEVERAL RETIREMENTS AND RESIGNATIONS. THE NUMBER OF FATAL CRASHES INCREASED AND FREEHLING BELIEVES THAT IS BECAUSE THERE WEREN’T ENOUGH COPS AVAILABLE TO HANDLE TRAFFIC ENFORCEMENT. THERE ARE 4 VACANCIES ON THE ALTOONA POLICE FORCE NOW AND FREEHLING HOPES TO START LOOKING AT APPLICATIONS NEXT WEEK. CITY COUNCIL YESTERDAY INTRODUCED AN ORDINANCE THAT WOULD MEAN POLICE AND NON-UNIFORMED OFFICERS WOULD NO LONGER HAVE TO LIVE IN THE CITY.

COUPLE CHARGED WITH CHILD ABUSE

ALTOONA POLICE YESTERDAY ARRESTED 22 YEAR OLD CHRISTOPHER KELLY AND 19 YEAR OLD AMBER MCBRIDE WHO ARE FACING ABUSE CHARGES INVOLVING THEIR 8 MONTH OLD SON. POLICE SAY KELLY WASN’T SUPPOSED TO BE ALONE WITH THE BABY DUE TO PREVIOUS ABUSE, BUT MCBRIDE LEFT THEM ALONE MARCH 16TH AND WHEN SHE RETURNED, THE BOY HAD SEVERE BRUISING. POLICE SAY KELLY ADMITTED TO STRIKING AND DROPPING THE BABY, BREAKING HIS LEG. BOTH KELLY AND MCBRIDE ARE IN THE BLAIR COUNTY PRISON AWAITING A HEARING. THE BOY IS IN PROTECTIVE CUSTODY.

STUDENT BUSTED/POT SEIZED

LOGAN TOWNSHIP POLICE TELL THE ALTOONA MIRROR A FIRE ALARM SUNDAY LED TO THE DISCOVERY OF 9-AND-A-HALF POUNDS OF MARIJUANA AND NEARLY 8-THOUSAND DOLLARS IN CASH AT AN APARTMENT AT NITTANY POINTE. 20 YEAR OLD PENN STATE ALTOONA SOPHOMORE ENDRI ZENELAJ OF NEW JERSEY TURNED HIMSELF IN YESTERDAY TO FACE VARIOUS CHARGES. ZENELAJ CAME TO THE U-S WHEN HE WAS 3 YEARS OLD AS A REFUGEE FROM ALBANIA. HE IS NOW A U-S CITIZEN. HE’S IN THE BLAIR COUNTY PRISON WITH A PRELIMINARY HEARING SCHEDULED APRIL 3RD.

HEARING WAIVED IN OVERDOSE

27 YEAR OLD RYAN KEMP OF THE STATE COLLEGE AREA WAIVED HIS PRELIMINARY HEARING YESTERDAY. HE’S IN THE CENTRE COUNTY PRISON, CHARGED IN CONNECTION WITH THE DEATH OF A 21 YEAR OLD BOALSBURG WOMAN ON JANUARY 25TH. KEMP ALLEGEDLY SHOT UP HEROIN WITH THE WOMAN…AND WHEN HE WOKE UP SHE WAS DEAD AT HIS HOME ON FAIRBROOK DRIVE. BAIL IS SET AT 500-THOUSAND DOLLARS.

SANDUSKY SCANDAL

PENN STATE’S PLANS TO HONOR FOOTBALL COACH JOE PATERNO DAYS AFTER HIS DEATH WERE HALTED BY THE UNIVERSITY’S BOARD OF TRUSTEES. ACCORDING TO STATE COLLEGE-DOT-COM, DOCUMENTS OBTAINED UNDER PENNSYLVANIA’S RIGHT-TO-KNOW LAW UNVEIL A STATEMENT FROM UNIVERSITY PRESIDENT RODNEY ERICKSON HONORING JOE-PA’S LEGACY AND OFFERING CONDOLENCES. HOWEVER, OFFICIALS OPTED NOT TO PUBLISH THE STATEMENT IN THE AFTERMATH OF THE SANDUSKY SCANDAL.

OUT OF THE GOVERNOR’S RACE

FORMER STATE AUDITOR GENERAL JACK WAGNER IS NO LONGER RUNNING FOR GOVERNOR. HE WITHDREW FROM THE DEMOCRATIC PRIMARY RACE YESTERDAY, WHICH WAS THE LAST DAY FOR CANDIDATES TO REMOVE THEIR NAMES FROM THE BALLOT. TOM WOLF, ALLYSON SCHWARTZ, ROB MCCORD AND KATIE MCGINTY ARE STILL IN THE RACE.

LONGER SCHOOL YEAR

THE HOLLIDAYSBURG SCHOOL BOARD HAS REVISED THE DISTRICT’S CALENDER AND NOW JUNE 6TH IS THE FINAL DAY OF CLASSES. GRADUATION WILL ALSO BE HELD THAT DAY, RAIN OR SHINE.THE DISTRICT IS MAKING UP FOR SEVERAL SNOW DAYS.
