MORE TROUBLE FOR VETS EDUCATION PROGRAM

THE ALTOONA MIRROR REPORTS THAT CLARION UNIVERSITY HAS PULLED OUT OF THE U-S VETERANS EDUCATION INSTITUTE WITHOUT GIVING A SPECIFIC REASON. TRUCK WRECKS

IN CAMBRIA COUNTY MONDAY, A TRUCK DRIVER SUFFERED MODERATE INJURIES WHEN HIS TRI-AXLE TRUCK CRASHED ALONG ROUTE 53 IN GALLITZIN TOWNSHIP. STATE POLICE SAY KEVIN WIRFEL OF LILLY WAS GOING TOO FAST ON A CURVE WHEN HE SWERVED INTO A GUIDERAIL…THEN RAN DOWN AN EMBANKMENT, AND HIT A UTILITY POLE. THE TRUCK CAME TO REST ON ITS PASSENGER SIDE.

THE DRIVER HAD ONLY MINOR INJURIES WHEN HE WRECKED AND SPILLED HIS LOAD OF LOGS ON THE SOUTHBOUND OFF-RAMP OF I-99 AT THE ROARING SPRING EXIT MONDAY MORNING. STATE POLICE SAY MARLIN KAUFFMAN OF ALLENSVILLE WAS TRAVELING TOO FAST ON THE CURVE. ROARING SPRING POLICE CHIEF MILTON FIELDS AND A PASSING MOTORIST PULLED KAUFFMAN FROM THE WRECKAGE. HE WAS THEN TAKEN TO THE HOSPITAL.

COVE SHOE FIRE

AFTER A SMALL FIRE EARLY MONDAY MORNING, PRODUCTION WILL RESUME TODAY AT COVE SHOE COMPANY IN MARTINSBURG…BUT WORK IN THE STICKING AREA MAY NOT RESUME OPERATIONS UNTIL THE END OF THE WEEK. OFFICIALS SAY THE FIRE PROTECTION SYSTEM AT THE BUILDING CONTAINED THE CEILING FIRE TO THE STITCHING AREA. HOWEVER THERE IS SOME SMOKE AND WATER DAMAGE. NO ONE WAS INJURED. A STATE POLICE FIRE MARSHAL IS INVESTIGATING.

ATTORNEY’S LAWSUIT ON HOLD

ATTORNEY TIM BURNS IS SUING BLAIR COUNTY AND SEVERAL OFFICIALS FOLLOWING HIS ATTACK DURING A COURTHOUSE HEARING BACK IN MAY…AND NOW THE ALTOONA MIRROR SAYS THE SUIT HAS BEEN PUT ON HOLD UNTIL COMMONWEALTH COURT CAN DETERMINE IF LOCAL OFFICIALS HAVE IMMUNITY. DEATH ROW INMATE ANDRE STATON USED HIS HANDCUFFED WRISTS TO CLUB BURNS OVER THE HEAD AND HE SUFFERED A CONCUSSION AND OTHER INJURIES.

WIFE BEATEN WITH GUN

69 YEAR OLD ROBERT KURTZ OF ALTOONA IS IN THE BLAIR COUNTY PRISON ON ASSAULT CHARGES. HE WAS ARRESTED SUNDAY AFTER HE ALLEGEDLY USED THE BUTT OF A RIFLE TO STRIKE HIS WIFE IN THE HEAD 3 TIMES…THEN IN THE FACE TWICE. POLICE TELL THE ALTOONA MIRROR IT STARTED WHEN KURTZ DAUGHTER COULDN’T FIND THE MISSING CAR KEYS. HE ALLEGEDLY POINTED THE GUN AT HER AND SAID HE WAS GOING TO KILL HER. THAT’S WHEN HIS WIFE INTERVENED. BAIL IS SET AT 50-THOUSAND DOLLARS CASH…AND KURTZ’ PRELIMINARY HEARING IS NEXT WEDNESDAY.

HIGH SCHOOL SEXTING ARRESTS

AT SOUTHERN HUNTINGDON HIGH SCHOOL IN 3 SPRINGS, WTAJ REPORTS THAT 16 TEENAGERS ARE FACING CRIMINAL CHARGES FOR ALLEGEDLY SENDING EXPLICIT PHOTOS ON CELL PHONES AND OTHER ELECTRONIC DEVICES BACK ON MARCH 20TH. ACCORDING TO STATE POLICE, THE 8 GIRLS AND 8 BOYS ALL RANGE FROM 13 TO 15 YEARS OLD…AND SOME OF THE MALES REPORTEDLY PUT INTENSE PRESSURE ON THE GIRLS. TROOPER DAVID MCGARVEY SAYS IT’S IMPORTANT FOR PARENTS TO TALK WITH KIDS ABOUT THE DANGERS OF SEXTING. THE CASES WILL ALL BE HANDLED BY THE JUVENILE COURT SYSTEM.
