WHO THREATENED WATER SUPPLY?

HOLLIDAYSBURG BORO POLICE ARE ZEROING IN ON A SUSPECT AFTER BOMB THREATS AGAINST THE COURTHOUSE AND A VAGUE THREAT TO THE WATER SUPPLY SYSTEM. MANY HOLLIDAYSBURG AND ALTOONA WATER AUTHORITY CUSTOMERS WERE WITHOUT WATER ALL WEEKEND AFTER THE THREAT WAS RECEIVED FRIDAY EVENING. DEPARTMENT OF ENVIROMENTAL PROTECTION TESTING PROVED THE WATER WAS SAFE TO DRINK. INVESTIGATORS BELIEVE THE SAME PERSON IS RESPONSIBLE FOR BOTH INCIDENTS.

SANDUSKY SCANDAL

ACCORDING TO A NEWS RELEASE, PENN STATE IS PAYING ALMOST 60 MILLION DOLLARS TO SETTLE LAWSUITS WITH 26 VICTIMS OF JERRY SANDUSKY. THE TOTAL PAY OUT IS 59-POINT-7 MILLION, BUT INDIVIDUAL AMOUNTS WERE NOT RELEASED DUE TO CONFIDENTIALITY AGREEMENTS. TODAY IN CENTRE COUNTY COURT, A HEARING IS SCHEDULED AS THE N-C-DOUBLE-A TRIES TO GET THE PATERNO FAMILY’S LAWSUIT AGAINST THE ASSOCIATION THROWN OUT. NCAA LAWYERS SAY THE SUIT IS “FATALLY FLAWED” AND THE “PLAINTIFFS DON’T HAVE STANDING TO CHALLENGE THE CONSENT AGREEMENT” BETWEEN THE ASSOCIATION AND PENN STATE. PENN STATE POLICE ARE INVESTIGATING 2 MORE SEXUAL ASSAULTS. A FEMALE STUDENT WAS TREATED AT MOUNT NITTANY MEDICAL CENTER SUNDAY AFTER CLAIMING SHE WAS ATTACKED BY A PERSON SHE KNOWS. FIRE VICTIM RESCUED

AN UPPER YODER TOWNSHIP POLICE SERGEANT RESCUED JOE VARMECKY FROM HIS BURNING HOUSE EARLY MONDAY ON THE 500 BLOCK OF SWANK STREET. VARMECKY IS HEARING IMPAIRED, CANNOT SPEAK, AND IS BLIND IN ONE EYE, BUT HE MADE IT OUT SAFELY. INVESTIGATORS SAY THE BLAZE WAS CAUSED BY A WOOD BURNER, AND HAS BEEN RULED ACCIDENTAL.

ALTOONA NEEDS FIREFIGHTERS

THE CITY OF ALTOONA POSTED AN ANNOUNCEMENT YESTERDAY SAYING THEY ARE LOOKING FOR SOME NEW FIREFIGHTERS. A PHYSICAL ABILITIES TEST IS SET FOR DECEMBER 7TH…AND A CIVIL SERVICE TEST THE FOLLOWING SATURDAY. YOU HAVE TO LIVE IN ALTOONA, BE AT LEAST A HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATE, AND NOT HAVE A CRIMINAL RECORD. APPLICATIONS ARE BEING ACCEPTED AT CITY HALL MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY BETWEEN 8:30 AND 4:30.

STABBED WITH SWORD

RATHER THAN STAND TRIAL IN CAMBRIA COUNTY COURT, TROY LLOYD OF NORTHERN CAMBRIA YESTERDAY PLEADED GUILTY TO AGGRAVATED ASSAULT FOR STABBING ROGER, JUNIOR, ENGLISH, WITH AN 18 INCH DECORATIVE SWORD OUTSIDE HIS HOME IN APRIL OF LAST YEAR. THE DEFENSE SAYS THE INCIDENT HAPPENED AFTER YEARS OF LLOYD BEING BULLIED BY THE VICTIM. ENGLISH HAD TO BE LIFELIGHTED TO UPMC ALTOONA WITH A COLLAPSED LUNG. LLOYD WILL BE SENTENCED TO 2-AND-A- HALF TO 10 YEARS IN STATE PRISON WHEN HE APPEARS IN COURT DECEMBER 17TH.

PART OF HIGHLAND HALL WILL BE DEMOLISHED

THE ALTOONA MIRROR REPORTS THAT HOLLIDAYSBURG BORO COUNCIL HAS APPROVED A DEMOLITION PERMIT FOR THE DAMAGED SECTION OF HIGHLAND HALL. THE RAZING IS LIKELY TO BEGIN WITHIN THE NEXT WEEK. A PORTION OF THE ROOF ON THE BACK OF THE HISTORIC BUILDING COLLAPSED EARLIER THIS MONTH FOLLOWING HEAVY RAINS. COMPANY OFFICIALS TELL WTAJ THEY HAVE BEEN HOSTING HAYRIDES FOR OVER 30 YEARS, BUT BINGE DRINKING IS BECOMING A HUGE PROBLEM. 2 WEEKS AGO, A GIRL WAS LOST FOR 6 HOURS IN THE WOODS BECAUSE SHE PASSED OUT.
