ALTOONA COP SHOOTS SUSPECT

STATE POLICE CONTINUE THEIR INVESTIGATION INTO MONDAY MORNING’S OFFICER-INVOLVED SHOOTING IN AN ALTOONA ALLEY. TROOPERS HAVE INTERVIEWED THE POLICE OFFICER AND THE MAN WHO WAS SHOT IN THE CHEST AND REMAINS HOSPITALIZED. THEY WANT TO TALK TO MORE PEOPLE BEFORE RELEASING THEIR FINDINGS TO THE DISTRICT ATTORNEY SOMETIME NEXT WEEK.

VICTIM IDENTIFIED

STATE POLICE HAVE RELEASED THE NAME OF THE MOTORCYCLIST WHO DIED IN A WRECK MONDAY MORNING IN CLEARFIELD COUNTY. STATE POLICE SAY A CAR DRIVEN BY 84 YEAR OLD KASPAR ANTHONY OF WELLSVILLE NEW YORK TURNED IN FRONT OF A BIKE ALONG THE BIGLER-PHILIPSBURG HIGHWAY. 59 YEAR OLD HARRY LEGO OF PHILIPSBURG, WAS EJECTED AND PRONOUNCED DEAD AT THE SCENE. ANTHONY AND HIS PASSENGER WERE NOT INJURED.

HOUSE DESTROYED

FLAMES GUTTED A HOUSE ALONG THE 100 BLOCK OF 11TH STREET IN WINDBER EARLY TUESDAY AFTERNOON AND 2 FIREFIGHTERS WERE SENT TO THE HOSPITAL, BUT THERE’S NO WORD ON THE EXTENT OF THEIR INJURIES. A STATE POLICE FIRE MARSHAL IS INVESTIGATING. THE HOMEOWNER, GINA HILLEGAS, AND HER 5 CHILDREN WER NOT INSIDE WHEN THE BLAZE BROKE OUT.

DRUG TRIAL COULD GO TO JURY

52 YEAR OLD KENNETH PINER OF ALTOONA WAS BACK ON THE STAND AT HIS DRUG TRIAL YESTERDAY... TELLING THE JURY HE SOLD SMALL AMOUNTS OF COCAINE AND CRACK…BUT THAT HE WAS NOT PART OF THE MAJOR DRUG RING OPERATING OUT OF THE CORNER BAR AND GRILL. PINER WAS ORIGINALLY SENTENCED TO 19 TO 38 YEARS IN A STATE PRISON, BUT WAS ALLOWED TO WITHDRAW HIS GUILTY PLEA AND GO TO TRIAL. THE JURY COULD GET THE CASE TODAY.

METH LAB IN BEDFORD COUNTY

AFTER RECEIVING TIPS FROM COMMUNITY MEMBERS, STATE POLICE IN BEDFORD COUNTY SAY THEY’VE BROKEN UP A METH OPERATION ALONG BAREFOOT ROAD IN ALUM BANK AND 25 YEAR OLD BROOK MALIA IS IN CUSTODY. INSIDE THE HOUSE, THEY FOUND ALL THE INGREDIENTS FOR MAKING A BATCH OF METH. MORE ARRESTS ARE EXPECTED.

FORMER PENN STATE OFFICIALS NOT OFF THE HOOK

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS REPORTS THAT PENNSYLVANIA JUDGE BARRY FEUDALE IS REFUSING TO THROW OUT THE GRAND JURY REPORT THAT LED TO CRIMINAL CHARGES AGAINST FORMER PENN STATE PRESIDENT GRAHAM SPANIER, FORMER VICE PRESIDENT GARY SHULTZ, AND FORMER ATHLETIC DIRECTOR TIM CURLEY. THE ADMINISTRATORS WANTED TO EXCLUDE THE TESTIMONY OF PENN STATE’S FORMER GENERAL COUNSEL, CYNTHIA BALDWIN, SAYING THEY BELIEVED SHE WAS REPRESENTING THEM SINCE SHE ACCOMPANIED THEM TO GRAND JURY APPEARANCES IN HARRISBURG IN EARLY 2011. THE JUDGE SAYS THE DEFENSE ATTORNEYS ARE USING STALL TACTICS TO DELAY THE CASE.

PUBLIC MEETING IN ALTOONA

AS REQUIRED BY LAW, ALTOONA IS HOLDING MEETINGS TO GIVE THE PUBLIC THE CHANCE TO COMMENT ON HOW THE CITY SHOULD SPEND ITS ANNUAL ENTITLEMENT FROM THE FEDERAL DEPARTMENT OF HOUSING AND URBAN DEVELOPMENT. THE NEXT SESSION IS TONIGHT AT 5 IN THE 4TH FLOOR CONFERENCE ROOM AT CITY HALL. COUNCIL VOTES ON THE PLAN MAY 13TH. LAST YEAR, THE CITY RECEIVED 1-POINT-46 MILLION DOLLARS FROM THE COMMUNITY BLOCK GRANT PROGRAM…249-THOUSAND FROM THE “HOME” PROGRAM…AND 157-THOUSAND FROM THE EMERGENCY SHELTER GRANT PROGRAM.

CHEAPER GAS

SPRINGTIME IS BRINGING SOME RELIEF AT THE PUMP. WESTERN PENNSYLVANIA GAS PRICES FELL TO AN AVERAGE OF $3.67 THIS WEEK, MAKING IT THE 6TH WEEK IN A ROW OF DECREASING FUEL PRICES. TODAY'S NATIONAL AVERAGE IS $3.58, DOWN 5 CENTS SINCE LAST WEEK. THAT’S 34 CENTS LESS THAN A YEAR AGO. ALTOONA-AREA DRIVERS ARE PAYING $3.69.
