STUDENT DIES IN APARTMENT

STATE COLLEGE POLICE ARE INVESTIGATING THE DEATH OF A 22 YEAR OLD PENN STATE STUDENT JUST DAYS BEFORE HIS GRADUATION. POLICE WERE CALLED JUST AFTER 10AM TUESDAY FOR A REPORT OF AN UNRESPONSIVE PERSON AT 119 WREN ALLEY. DARREN STAFFORD OF NEW JERSEY WAS IN FULL CARDIAC ARREST AND WAS LATER PRONOUNCED DEAD AT THE SCENE. POLICE SAY THERE WAS NO INDICATION OF TRAUMA OR THAT FOUL PLAY WAS INVOLVED.

FRANKLIN FACES ACCUSATIONS

NEW PENN STATE FOOTBALL COACH JAMES FRANKLIN IS DENYING ANY WRONGDOING, BUT HE AND PENN STATE’S DIRECTOR OF PERFORMANCE ENHANCEMENT, DWIGHT GALT, ARE FACING NEW ACCUSATIONS IN A RAPE CASE INVOLVING A FORMER PLAYER AT VANDERBILT UNIVERSITY. THE SUSPECT’S LAWYERS ARE TRYING TO GET THE CHARGES DISMISSED AND THEY SAY THE PROSECUTION DESTROYED EVIDENCE THAT COULD HELP THEIR CASE. THEIR MOTION SAYS 2 PIECES OF EVIDENCE THAT ARE MISSING ARE TEXT MESSAGES AND PHONE CALLS FROM COACH FRANKLIN TO THE ALLEGED VICTIM. THE DEFENSE CLAIMS FRANKLIN ASKED HER TO ROUND UP 15 PRETTY GIRLS TO HELP THEM RECRUIT NEW PLAYERS…AND THAT IS AGAINST NCAA RULES. PROSECUTORS IN TENNESSEE SAY THEY HAVE NO EVIDENCE THAT FRANKLIN PARTICIPATED IN ANY COVER-UP, BUT HE COULD BE CALLED TO TESTIFY AT THE TRIAL.

BABY BURNED

A PRELIMINARY HEARING IS SCHEDULED TODAY FOR 23 YEAR OLD EARL SAUNDERS OF THE OAKHURST HOMES. JOHNSTOWN POLICE SAY HE INTENTIONALLY BURNED HIS 6 MONTH OLD DAUGHTER BACK IN FEBRUARY… PUTTING HER GIRL IN THE BATH TUB WITH SCALDING HOT WATER. THE CHILD SUFFERED SECOND DEGREE BURNS OVER 20-PERCENT OF HER BODY. SAUNDERS TOLD AUTHORITIES HE DID IT BECAUSE HE WAS ANGRY AND FRUSTRATED.HE’S IN THE CAMBRIA COUNTY JAIL.

PREGNANT WOMAN ASSAULTED

STATE POLICE IN BLAIR COUNTY SAY 23 YEAR OLD CHRISTOPHER CLAYCOMB OF GREENFIELD TOWNSHIP ASSAULTED HIS GIRLFRIEND YESTERDAY AT THEIR HOME. THE 20 YEAR OLD WOMAN…WHO IS 3 MONTHS PREGNANT…CLAIMS CLAYCOMB SLAPPED, CHOKED, AND PUSHED HER SEVERAL TIMES…ONCE CAUSING HER TO FALL DIRECTLY ON HER STOMACH ONTO A CHILD SAFETY SEAT. SHE WAS TAKEN TO UPMC ALTOONA FOR TREATMENT. CLAYCOMB IS IN PRISON WITH A PRELIMINARY HEARING SCHEDULED NEXT THURSDAY.

HEARING POSTPONED FOR BOMB THREAT SUSPECT

A PRELIMINARY HEARING FOR STEVEN JABLONSKI OF JOHNSTOWN HAS BEEN POSTPONED UNTIL MAY 20TH. HE’S CHARGED WITH CALLING IN A BOMB THREAT TO THE CAMBRIA COUNTY COURTHOUSE LAST WEEK, LEADING TO AN EVACUATION.

DRUG BUSTS

JOHNSTOWN POLICE SAY AGENTS MADE AN UNDERCOVER BUY FROM JERMAINE JONES MONDAY AFTERNOON…THEN PULLED OVER THE CAR HE WAS RIDING IN IN THE OAKHURST SECTION OF TOWN AND FOUND A LARGE AMOUNT OF CASH, HEROIN, MARIJUANA, AND THE POWERFUL PAINKILLER FENTANYL. WHEN THEY SEARCHED HIS GIRLFRIEND’S STONE STREET HOME, THEY SEIZED A LOT MORE DRUGS AND OVER 270-THOUSAND DOLLARS IN CASH. THE ESTIMATED STREET VALUE OF ALL THE HEROIN SEIZED IS 12-THOUSAND DOLLARS. JONES IS IN THE CAMBRIA COUNTY JAIL. FENTANYL LACED HEROIN HAS BEEN BLAMED FOR 22 DEATHS IN WESTERN PENNSYLVANIA THIS YEAR.

A DRUG BUST MONDAY IN HUNTINGDON COUNTY. ATTORNEY GENERAL KATHLEEN KANE SAYS STATE AND LOCAL AGENTS ARRESTED 35 YEAR OLD LUIS BERNAL AND 33 YEAR OLD JACQUITA KIERMAN OF HUNTINGDON AFTER THEY BOUGHT HEROIN FROM THEM. AT THE COUPLE’S RENTAL HOME, COPS FOUND 3 GRAMS OF HEROIN, WORTH AN ESTIMATED 15-HUNDRE DOLLARS…A SMALL AMOUNT OF CRACK COCAINE…MORE THAN 1-THOUSAND DOLLARS IN CASH…AND SEVERAL LOADED GUNS. BERNAL IS ORGINALLY FROM NEW YORK AND KIERMAN FROM NEW JERSEY. PRELIMINARY HEARINGS ARE SCHEDULED MAY 13TH AND ADDITIONAL ARRESTS ARE EXPECTED.

REPAIRS NEEDED AT COURTHOUSE

TV 10 REPORTS THAT THE BLAIR COUNTY COURTHOUSE IS BATTLING A WATER PROBLEM…SOME WALLS ARE CRACKING…AND HOLES HAVE BEEN CUT IN THE CEILING TO ALLOW WATER TO DRAIN. COMMISSIONERS PLAN TO BRING IN A SPECIALIST TO DETERMINE JUST HOW BAD THE DAMAGE IS, BUT THEY MUST FOLLOW THE GUIDELINES FOR THE REVITALIZATION OF HISTORIC BUILDINGS. OFFICIALS SAY THE EMPLOYEE PARKING LOT ACROSS THE STREET IN HOLLIDAYSBURG IS ALSO DAMAGED AND WILL NEED REPAIRS ESTIMATED AT MORE THAN 150-THOUSAND DOLLARS.

THE CREDIT RATING AGENCY, STANDARD & POOR'S SAID MONDAY THAT IT WILL DOWNGRADE PENNSYLVANIA'S RATING IF IT DOESN'T MAKE STRIDES TO BALANCE THE BUDGET AND ADDRESS PENSION LIABILITIES. OFFICIALS SAY THEY FEAR THE SHORTFALL MAY KNOCK GOVERNOR TOM CORBETT'S BUDGET PROPOSAL OUT OF BALANCE BY A BILLION DOLLARS.

NEW UNEMPLOYMENT STATS

BLAIR COUNTY’S UNEMPLOYMENT RATE HELD STEADY AT 5-POINT-8 PERCENT IN MARCH. CLEARFIELD AND HUNTINGDON COUNTIES WERE ALSO STEADY WHILE CAMBRIA AND CENTRE COUNTIES DROPPED ONE-TENTH. BEDFORD COUNTY’S NUMBER CLIMBED 4-TENTHS OF ONE PERCENT TO STAND AT 7-POINT-6. THE STATE JOBLESS NUMBER FELL 2-TENTHS TO 6-PERCENT. NATIONWIDE, UNEMPLOYMENT IS EVEN AT 6-POINT-7 PERCENT.
