CORBETT’S BUDGET

GOVERNOR TOM CORBETT’S PROPOSED 29-POINT-4 BILLION DOLLAR BUDGET WOULD INCREASE PENNSYLVANIA’S SPENDING BY NEARLY 1 BILLION DOLLARS WITHOUT RAISING TAXES. NEW FUNDING IS INCLUDED FOR SCHOOLS, SCHOLARSHIPS, AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT. CORBETT ALSO SET ASIDE 14-MILLION DOLLARS TO TRAIN 350 NEW STATE TROOPERS AND MORE THAN 34-BILLION DOLLARS FOR HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES. THE LEGISLATURE HAS UNTIL JUNE 30TH TO PASS THE FINAL BUDGET.

THE SPENDING PLAN CALLS FOR PENN STATE TO RECEIVE FLAT FUNDING EQUIVALENT TO THE PREVIOUS 2 YEARS.ACCORDING TO STATE COLLEGE.COM, THE UNIVERSITY WILL GET 229-POINT-7 MILLION DOLLARS, DESPITE A REQUEST FOR AN ADDITIONAL 5-PERCENT. THE GOOD NEWS IS THAT THE GOVERNOR IS PROPOSING 47-POINT-7 MILLION DOLLARS FOR RESEARCH AND EXTENSION PROGRAMS FOR THE COLLEGE OF AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES.

UNEMPLOYMENT DROPS

BLAIR COUNTY’S UNEMPLOYMENT RATE DROPPED 4-TENTHS OF A PERCENT TO LAND AT 6-POINT-3 PERCENT IN DECEMBER. SIGNIFICANT DECREASES WERE ALSO REPORTED IN SURROUNDING COUNTIES. THE STATEWIDE JOBLESS RATE FELL FROM 7-POINT-3 TO 6-POINT-9 PERCENT. THE NATIONAL NUMBER DROPPED 3-TENTHS TO 6-POINT-7 PERCENT.

HEARING FOR BOMB SUSPECT

18 YEAR-OLD PENN STATE ALTOONA STUDENT VLADISLAV MIFTAKHOV IS SCHEDULED TO APPEAR AT A PRELIMINARY HEARING TODAY. HE WAS ARRESTED JANUARY 24TH AFTER POLICE FOUND BOMB-MAKING MATERIALS AT HIS APARTMENT ON THE 100 BLOCK OF NORTH 9TH AVENUE IN THE JUNIATA SECTION OF ALTOONA. POLICE ORIGINALLY THOUGHT THE RUSSIAN TEEN WAS GROWING AND SELLING MARIJUANA. COPS SEIZED A COMPUTER AND OTHER ELECTRONICS FROM THE APARTMENT. MIFTAKHOV CLAIMS HE WAS ONLY PLANNING TO DETONATE THE BOMB IN A REMOTE FIELD.

VETS HOME RESIDENT IN JAIL

THE ALTOONA MIRROR REPORTS THAT 58 YEAR OLD DOUGLAS KLAHR WHO LIVES AT THE HOLLIDAYSBURG VETERANS HOME TRIED TO KILL ANOTHER PERSON ON SATURDAY. ALLEGHENY TOWNSHIP POLICE SAY KLAHR WAS UPSET BECAUSE THE OTHER MAN SNITCHED ON HIM FOR DRINKING. HE ALLEGEDLY HELD A KNIFE TO THE OTHER MAN’S NECK. A WITNESS PUNCHED KLAHR AND HELD HIM UNTIL STAFF MEMBERS RESPONDED. KLAHR IS IN THE BLAIR COUNTY PRISON ON 10-THOUSAND DOLLARS CASH BOND. A PRELIMINARY HEARING IS SCHEDULED NEXT THURSDAY.

VEHICULAR HOMICIDE TRIAL IN THE SPRING

33 YEAR OLD DALE MALLOY JUNIOR OF VINTONDALE IS EXPECTED TO STAND TRIAL THIS SPRING ON VEHICULAR HOMICIDE CHARGES. HE APPEARED IN CAMBRIA COUNTY COURT YESTERDAY AND THE JUDGE GRANTED A CONTINUANCE. POLICE SAY MALLOY WAS DRIVING DRUNK LAST YEAR WHEN HIS PICKUP CRASHED ON CHICKOREE HILL ROAD, KILLING HIS GIRLFRIEND, 26 YEAR OLD KALYNN REYNOLDS OF VINTONDALE.

ATTEMPTED KIDNAPPING?

STATE COLLEGE POLICE TELL THE CENTRE DAILY TIMES THAT A BORO WOMAN REPORTED THAT SHE ESCAPED FROM A BLACK MAN WHO TRIED TO PULL HER INTO HIS WHITE SEDAN ABOUT 1AM SATURDAY ALONG SOUTH ALLEN STREET. BACK ON JANUARY 25TH, A PENN STATE STUDENT SAID SHE WAS FORCED INTO A CAR BY A GROUP OF MEN ON SHORTLIDGE ROAD. SHE WAS ABLE TO GET AWAY BEFORE BEING SEXUALLY ASSAULTED. POLICE ARE STILL INVESTIGATING BOTH CASES.

FORKLIFT THIEF ARRESTED I

N CAMBRIA COUNTY, HASTINGS POLICE SAY 31 YEAR OLD MICHAEL LACEY OF PATTON IS THE ONE WHO STOLE A FORKLIFT LAST WEEKEND AND CAUSED MORE THAN 100-THOUSAND DOLLARS IN DAMAGE. HE ALLEGEDLY DROVE INTO A CAR, YARD FOUNTAIN, AND A RESIDENTIAL GARAGE DUE TO A PERSONAL VENDETTA AGAINST ANOTHER PERSON. LACEY IS CHARGED WITH RECKLESS ENDANGERMENT, AGGRAVATED ASSAULT, CRIMINAL MISCHIEF, THEFT, AND 8 OTHER COUNTS.
